Tell me more!

I spent years and years apart from God.  The truth is that I don't think I was even looking for Him.  I had a lot of things going on, you understand?  My girl friend's father (and my future father-in-law) was a minister and so I went to church now and then ;-)

There was one weird thing about their house whenever I went to visit: it was so peaceful.  Sometimes I would simply go there and fall asleep on the couch and be completely content.  It was so different from all the hassles in the house I grew up in.

It never ever occurred to me that the reason for the peace in that house was because my girl friend and her dad and mom all loved God!  I remember looking at their old grandfather's clock that chimed every 15 minutes and figuring that must be it.  So, I decided whenever I got a house in the future that it would have one of those clocks in it.   It was only after God changed my own life that I even realized this peace came from Jesus.  Some times you can't see what is in front of you.  I can't explain it - I think maybe some of you understand. . .
If you want to know how God changed my life you can check it out here.  If you would rather not then that's cool.
After I gave my life to Jesus in 1995, my son gave his life to Jesus in Washington, DC in the summer of 1997 in RFK Stadium at a Promise Keepers event.  On July 9, 2000 my son and my wife (who has loved Christ for as long as she can remember) were baptized together at the same time.  My friends Cyrus and Kristin were also baptized that day.  It was a day of great, great joy as they all publicly declared their faith in Jesus Christ!
Here are some books that have helped me understand about God:

Jesus with Dirty Feet
- Don Everts - short book, no preaching, cool

The Man in The Mirror - Solving the 24 Problems Men Face by Patrick M. Morley - For men and the things that men have to deal with.  A "real" book.

The Jesus I Never Knew - Phillip Yancey

The Case For Christ - Lee Strobel  - Lee was an atheist when he started writing this book

The Bible (the New International Version - NIV Translation)  -  when in doubt, go to the source!

Notes:  t
he King James (KJV) authorized version translation is wonderful but the translation was done 400 years ago and I find it hard to read because the English language has changed.  Others find it easy to read.  Incidentally, I was reading the KJV, Psalm 66, when I came to Christ! . . .
One word of caution here - a very few translations in English (the Bible was originally written in Hebrew and Aramaic and Greek) of the Bible make many changes to the meaning of the original text despite the warnings in the book of Revelation against doing just that.  For example:  one intentional mistranslation, in the first words of the Book of John says "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was a God."  when the Bible should say (correctly): "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." (NIV) The difference in wording, in the first case, denies the unique divinity of Jesus Christ ("the Word") and, by so doing, is inconsistent with all that the Bible teaches about Christ's divinity.  Also, if anyone says you must have one or more additional texts with you in order to understand the meaning of the Bible when you read the Bible then beware.  Some call themselves "Christians" and yet work only to subvert God's purposes.  Do not be deceived my friends!
