A Short January 2000 Tale of a Narrow Escape |
|
| We've
recently come through an extended period of near zero degree (F) nights.
It was nearly 10 degrees yesterday and I was out
surfing alone in the ocean in some 6' head high. Then, suddenly, an
incredibly remarkable thing happened. I was just coming down the
face of a wave when, suddenly, there was a big gust of wind in my face
and the world just . . stopped. The wave froze solidly in place and my
stick jerked to a severe halt. I was thrown forward and just sorta
skipped and slid along the glassy ice and finally came to a halt about
100 feet away just behind the
spreading lake of glass ice. Man, I'm glad I didn't slide into the water
ahead of where it was flash freezing up or this story would never
have been written.
It was weird looking back
at that stick solidly locked into that ice sculpture of a wave. Walked
back and just stood there expecting something to happen but
nothing did. Everything was just frozen in place - like being in a time
warp. I just arrived home and have posted this to the RIRiders
site. I've grabbed my ice ax and hope to reclaim my equipment before
someone else grabs it.
Hate to say it but it sure
looks like there will be no more surfing this winter of 2000 until the
Big Thaw sometime this spring.
