The
2000 Season Winds Up |
|
Reading
through the mail this October 11th morning and came across an article
called "The Season Winds Down".
Down?
It's winding UP, not down!
In fact, it's often hard to get the firewood into the house
because of the frequent surf. Just a few more water degrees
downward and the last of the bathing suits, shorties and 3/2 podners
will be back on the road heading for the ski slopes. Do I hear an
amen? :-
It's
time to dust off that 7 mil gear, get the wheel bearing grease out for the
face, get some antifreeze to add to the coffee and again get used to the
idea that you won't get dropped in on while riding that wave when you're
more than 2' off of the peak.
October is, for me, an introspective time as we make the
transition from looking for surf to actually surfing and from casually
quickly jumping into the water to putting on all the gear to keep from
freezing. The beach houses are closing down and local parking
enforcement takes a break. The lights are green more often (less traffic
during the surf week.) Bess Eaton becomes a favorite doughnut shop
stop again (sometimes just to warm up). From my experience the
water really feels cold once it gets to around 42 to 43 degrees
(F). Once it gets there I really make a conscious effort to stay
out of the impact zone! That includes trying to get a serious look
at what is behind the current wave.
I really miss the summer and I really like the winter
surf. New England is not for the faint of heart that's for
sure. Not much more to say here . . . just gettin' introspective .
