John 3:16

Sept. 11, 2001

Only be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them slip from your heart as long as you live.
Deuteronomy 4:9

Did you know that both the RI State Flag and State Seal have an "Anchor" and the word "Hope" in them?  These two items come from the Holy Bible in the Book of Hebrews, chapter 6, verse 19 where it says "We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure." The "hope" and "anchor" are one and the same:
 The Lord Jesus Christ.

"Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes."
James 4:14

Date Comments:
12/30/99 (Posted 1/1/2000)    Been a busy time.  Had time to surf but not talk about it here :-)   Was working on the firewood in the afternoon when all of a sudden the big winds stopped.  Grabbed my gear and drove to avenues at 2 PM.  Some decisions are too easy . . .
Diminishing winds at the coast; waist to occasional head high with 2 other guys out.  Finally the wind stopped and it glassed off.  Surfed into darkness.  Very good session / very clean lefts and rights.  There was surf 12/31 but I missed it.
12/28/99    Found some "solid knee high" and occasional waist high at the Light at noon time and got in about an hour and a half.  Bright sunny day and light breeze made it nice to be out there despite the cool air temperature.  No one else out.
12/26/99    Mostly flat now.  NW winds should keep it that way for a few days.  There hasn't been a New Year's Day with surf for a number of  years now.  Will this year be any different? Stay tuned.
12/21/99    Got into the water at the Light at 9:45 in head high+.  Fairly decent swell working.  After a while got out once the tide dropped and drove to avenues. Finally got out of the water at 3:15 PM.  Avenues were head high to occasionally overhead, clean, light offshore breeze.  Both outer and inner breaks firing.  Excellent surf.  Really tired at the end.  5 hr.+ session. Woof woof!  Should be flat tomorrow.
12/16/99    Surfed 5 hours (11-4) straight in a generally small swell at  (several) Avenues (mostly waist high) and the light.  The light was wind blown, rough and very choppy with a shoulder high set now and then.  Today (12/17) it is flat and will be for a few days.
12/15/99    Tunces is head high to overhead.  There were some big close out bombs but things were cleaning up a bit by noontime.  Got in 2 hours this AM.  Waves were thick and heavy.  Didn't ride too many.
12/14/99    Surfed from 2 - 4:30 PM at 32nd St.  Wind was intense at times - blowing off the tops of waves but there was some clean chest high. Lefts and rights were working.  The wind was causing those faces to hold up an unnaturally long time and it occasionally got a little hollow.  Guys pulling in and leaning under that lip looking for a barrel!  Should be good 12/15 in the morning also.
12/07/99    <Posted 12/8 - been busy last few daze>.  Surf at the Light was waist to some solid head high in sets.  Got in 4 (count-um) straight hours between 10 and 2 PM.  Wind was strong off shore at times but some of the sets were really good.  No time to surf today but there is one report of waist to shoulder, same place, at sun set.  Possible surf at dawn tomorrow but no guarantees!
12/06/99    This morning's forecast of 4-8' seas, 5' swell at the Bay entrance, SW winds and small craft warnings was wrong on each and every count.  It's flat out there people. Flat, foggy and the wind is calm.
12/02/99    Surfed 32nd Street from 11 AM - 2:30 PM today with no one else out. Isn't it great to have a break all to yourself every now and then? There were some head high sets which were completely unexpected since the swell is small and is supposed to be easterly.  It isn't; it's southerly!  5 guys out at the East Light at 3 PM but conditions were a lot smaller and mostly closing out.  Wore the dry suit and 7 mil gloves for the first time this fall.  The 3 mil wet suit is retired for the winter.
11/29/99 PM    Current marine predictions of 6-12' seas for the morning of Dec 1.  <Boston generated marine predictions were wrong> Rest up tomorrow for the storm on the way.  It's almost time to switch from the wet suit to the dry suit.
We had our first snow flurries of the fall here at the Swamp Fortress tonight.
11/27/99    Wind turned off shore, the swell cleaned up, sets were solid head high and, as sunset approached,  glass conditions at Avenues.  3+ hours in the water.  Sky turned pink, orange and gold from east to west and north to south.  Incredible colors everywhere, horizon to horizon.  A rare evening on the water.
A nice "last" set approached and
the other guy out at the point with me said he was going left, I was going right, so we took off together, side by side and as the wave jacked up we split the peak, a board and a kayak, and we both just nailed that wave.  Deep and fast -  a great way to end the night.
11/26/99    Got in 4 hours at 32nd street.  Mostly chest high with a rare bigger set.
11/25/99    Happy Thanksgiving everyone!  Surfed 11/23 in small stuff at Tunces and got in 2 hours + at the Light this morning on this Turkey Day.  Hello to Nat and Fred who were out there negotiating that waist to shoulder high in the wind and rain.  South Side was clean and working with a half dozen boards out when I left for home.  That fog horn is tough though! This swell has been going on for 5 daze now . . .
11/22/99    Surfed from noon til 4:00 PM.  Started out waist high at noon and sets were solid head high at 4:00 PM.  I had Tunces all to myself for well over 2 hours today.  Glass conditions.  Incredible.  Some big, way outside, sets went uncontested.  Fog was intense but you could see the walls with no problem once you were (way) out there.  Hoot hoot !!!
11/21/99    There is a small but definite swell out there. Knee to waist high at most breaks.  No wind . . .so enjoy!
11/20/99    Surfed some solid 2 footers at the Town Beach this afternoon.  Maybe 30 hungry guys out but not a lot happening.  It was good to get wet.
11/18/99   Possibility of some waves starting late Saturday 11/20/99.  Stay tuned . . .
11/3/99    Didn't get wet today.  Well overhead but lots of closeouts and wind is heavy.  Shot a little video at noon time instead.  Find frame grabs here
10/27/99    Tunces had mostly knee to occasional chest high today so spent a few early afternoon hours soaking up the bright sun and surf.  No gloves needed yet but they will be needed in a week or so.  Saw someone with a hood on!  Shades of things to come.
Jeff was back in the line up after absence due to a heart attack.  Welcome back Jeff!

10/28/99 - It's completely flat today and will be for a few days
10/24/99 Surfed at the light for a few hours in the PM in some waist high.  The summer population is trailing off now - heard someone talking about how cold the water was!  Air temps were in the 60's, it was sunny and the water felt really good. A nice afternoon to be in the water.
10/20/99 (posted 10/22) PM: 32nd St. for a while in itsy bitsy teeny weenie occasionally solid knee high. Then to the avenues for an occasional head high in a rapidly dying wind swell.  No one else out at either place.
10/17/99 (posted 10/22 Surfed the light for a few hours in waist to shoulder.
10/18 AM: I could not believe the intel. (i.e., no swell yet) received at the Swamp Fortress so drove to the ocean to get a direct "eyes on".  At 8:20 AM there is absolutely no swell and there is a 105 MPH hurricane just south of RI.  (NOAA current picture to left). Looks like by the time the swell gets here winds will be cranking too. <p.s. no swell ever arrived>  35 MPH forward speed must have been the reason?
9/20, 21, 22/99    Surfed from 7:30-1:30 and 3:30 to 6:30 (9 hours) on September 20th.  A new personal record.  dead tired at the end. It was big and challenging all 3 daze.  9/21 surfed 4 hours and 9/22 ??? (stopped counting).  Just walked away from overhead 9/22 to go do something else.  Body just needed to dry out.  Catching overhead closeouts just for amusement at the end.  Too much good surf for too many good hours.
9/19/99    Goodbye Floyd, hello Gert.  The swell from Gert is here.   All points should be going off today and getting bigger as we get into next week.   Wind isn't a factor yet so enjoy!  I'm on the road again starting in 2 hours after less than one day back home. Woof woof !!!
9/18/99    Scored a solid hour of video from Floyd.  Overhead 1 1/2.  It will be on a photo page here soon.  Hours and hours of surfing earlier this week.  Amazing.
09/14/99    It's amazing how Floyd was sending decent surf locally while it was still 600 miles ESE of Florida.  This is a huge storm.  Looks like head high + and getting bigger for the indefinite future with several hurricanes brewing.   The camera batteries are charging and going on the road tonight indefinitely ???   Meanwhile, it's time to construct some plywood storm windows and install them today.
9/11/99    Surfed at the Light on the down side of the wind swell which had its good moments in head high.  Not really clean however until it got chest high. Have some limited film of this swell but no time yet to put it up here.  RealSoonNow
9/2/99    It has been quite a week.  Surfed 8/30 (Monday) for 7 hours (AM & PM), 8/31 6 hours (AM & PM) and 9/1 in the early AM.  Surfed 32nd Street, Tunces and Restaurants.  9/1 early was the best - semi glass, 5 guys out (where I was), solid head high + in sets. Really excellent. The body needs a rest - ribs were sore last night but that's not a complaint!
Today is good also and conditions will stay good until the storm down south dies.  Will put up a few pictures here when I get to it.
8/29/99 First signs of a swell now.  It will probably increase so check out your gear now so you'll be ready.  I'll be on the road 8/30 if current predictions hold. Hope to get some new film for a new "surf photos4" page.
PM Update  Seas are forecast to be 5 - 10 feet in 24 hours.  Large Surf Truck is ready for an early AM start with all systems go.  Secret point breaks will be going off soon.  Will be on the road until further notice.  Lots of boards out there so be careful everyone.  Later . . .
8/28/99 Watching Florida at the moment and waiting. When will it get here?  Stay tuned.  Had a few small sessions at Tunces recently but nothing worth detailing.
8/14/99    You will probably catch some waves today if the ocean cleans up.   I'll be out tomorrow cruzing in case there are some left overs.
Caught some occasional shoulder high 8/9 at South Side, some rare "waist high close outs" 8/11 at the town beach and some excellent occasional shoulder high at Tunces on 8/12 in a 3 hour session.
8/6/99 Surfed last 2 days - best was some occasional chest high 8/5 at the light.   Got in 3 hours.
8/4/99 Been a little lax updating this log lately as it has been mostly flat and hot hot hot.  Caught a little rare waist high the last 3 weeks but we're all really waiting for the hurricane season to start.  Locals are wound tight and hungry waiting for that next fix. I'm heading out this PM hoping to score some solid knee high but it's most likely a desperate move by a desperate man.
7/13/99 PM Waist high arrived early.  I'm on the road again . . .
7/12/99 surf Possibility of some waist high surf 48 hours from now.
7/7/99 The 4 daze of upper 90 degree heat are over today.  Good Riddance!   Surf is small and the water is warm so maybe it's time to declare this "Adapt a Soaker" month and help someone new at a local beach learn to surf.  It's great to hoot for someone who has just caught their first wave!
7/1/99 Surf is going off.  6/30 caught some solid head high plus but you had to be patient.  Tunces was reported to be good.  Some places that rarely fire are going off.  Looks good thru tomorrow night.
6/29/99 noon Looks like there will be some waves today and tomorrow.  Heading out on the road this afternoon to catch some.
6/20/99 pm Just got back from a week+ surf trip in Rhode Island.  Mostly waist high on average and, as always, reports of head high "a few hours ago".  It was a good week with several mystery swells as well as figuring out a new 180 degree maneuver that I'll practice some more before giving it a name other than "Mystery Move #4"  The lawn is higher than the surf right now.
6/11/99 noon

It's waist+ locally right now;  bigger further north.  Have fun as the swell continues!  6/12/99 looks like the whole East coast is going off.  Looks good right through Monday.  Time to fire up Large Pickup and get on the road - the lawn can wait.

6/10/99 Caught a little unadvertised (and unexpected) waist high surf at Restaurants from 8 to 10 AM.  There was a rare head high set and lots of lulls in the action.   It was weird - flat everywhere but here.  So, since there were maybe 3 people in the whole State of Rhode Island out surfing, I caught a few for the rest of you.   You're welcome smiley.gif (906 bytes)
5/31/99 Flat for the foreseeable future.
Posted 5/27/99 Surf 5/25 was overhead at times at the Avenues. Outer and inner breaks firing.  Some lean spells but generally Excellent session - wind was strong at times.   5/26 the Town Beach (of all places!) was the best.  Some waist to chest and a few of them didn't close out!  Caught a few (oink oink).  Lots of people there - it's summertime conditions now.  Soakers everywhere.  Almost time for carnage reports . . .  Hurricane season starts next week!
5/23/1999 Surf Alert Surf alert for Monday/Tuesday (5/24,25).  Only negative at the moment is South wind prediction.  When it switches away from South - do it.
5/19/99  Surf Alert Surfed the last 3 days straight.  Overhead surf is going off now as I write and should be good tomorrow also.  5/17 and 5/18 were chest to well overhead on sets.  Yesterday caught one semi_closeout bomb at 32nd St (of all places) that was exceptional (if you weren't in the close out section that is.)  The Surf Dawg made it for the hairiest ride this spring.  Hoot!  Will write up a "surf stories" report on this 3 day period if I find time.
PS - Kathy caught 32nd St several hours one morning head high, glassy and no one out!  Every now and then . . .  It doesn't get much better than that.
5/4/99 (posted 5/6/99) Tunces set waves were head high + and average was chest high. However, most other breaks were in the waist high range. Surfed 4 hours.  Dog tired at the end.   Last wave: took off too deep on a left and got hung up on the face like a fly on fly paper. I'm not much on air drops. Came in right after that!  Good May session.   Nearly flat on 5/5 and flat on 5/6.
5/3/1999 Overhead +
5/2/1999 Surf Alert Looks like surf for the next 2 days or so.  Stay tuned as that NE wind picks up.
4/17/1999 (posted 4/19) Surf at the light was overhead at times in the morning.  Caught one wave in particular that was big - saw the horizon move and a short time later was lucky enough to be in the right place.  Many long rides - an excellent session - out there 4 hours +
4/16/1999 Several (3) sessions recently but conditions were small (mostly waist).   One chest high on a late afternoon swell a few days ago that was gone the next AM.   It's flat right now.  We're starting the summer pattern of flat flat flat.   First "no wet suit in 50 degree water"  Kook Alert of the season is hereby issued ;-)  The town beach is getting crowded in knee high conditions.
4/05/1999 Commentary 1998 and 1999 were marked by a basic change in East coast weather patterns.   Surf producing storms historically go up the East coast but in the past year many storm paths have shifted more over land than ocean.  There have been fewer storms out to sea off the Rhode Island coast so the surf events are fewer and more wind than "storm out at sea" generated swells.
4/04/1999 Easter Sunday afternoon The lot at Tunces had one car in it and occasional set waves to the west were shoulder+ clean!  Disbelief.  Exceptionally cool unadvertised special private rip session. Sometimes the surf telephone lines are simply wrong.  Praise the Lord!
3/28/1999 Sunday afternoon Head high but occasionally windy.  Surfed with big G and a cast of dozens at Tunces.  Nat pulled a leg muscle in the morning surf so it is slow go now for him.
3/23/1999 Tuesday 3 1/2 hour session at Avenues in chest to well overhead.  A bomb would come through maybe every 20 minutes keeping everyone loose.  First signs of the approaching summer season with one new face in the line up.  Snaked him on a "welcome back" move but he returned the effort with a rare double snake.   High fives a few minutes later!  It was cool. Few other recent overhead sessions but have been too busy to document them here.
3/22/1999 Monday Got some video at Monnys including several barrels and Mr. BB doing 2 consecutive clean vertical 360 moves in hollow head high on a boogie board.  "Did I just see that?"   Run the replay . . .
3/05/1999 Friday Surf for the foreseeable future.  Got in 3+ hours today at the light.  Mostly chest to head high and fun sized.  Had one wave that just arched over and beyond me for a short clean barrel; a few walls but mostly casual crusing stuff.  Good day.
3/02/1999 Winds going strong SE again tonight. We're in an extended time of surf. 6 weeks left in the winter season. Grab it while you can.
3/01/1999 Surf was shoulder to well overhead at avenues and the takeoff zones were tight but if you were unconcerned about collecting social security the rewards were there. Long rides and some fast sections. Ripped for 3 1/2 hours straight. Great googliemooglie.
02/25/1999 Big storm overhead / a foot+ of snow working.  Waves will be Overhead soon but the wind is big.   If the wind drops it will be good.  Stay tuned.  Anyone camped out at the beach will be rewarded eventually.
02/20/1999
N
ortheastern Occasionally Accurate forecAsts (NOAA)
One day - Saturday morning early was best but not big.  At 2:00 PM there was no wind,  The Rhode Is. sound marine forecast was for 30 knots, etc, etc.  Has the Marine Weather (NOAA Boston) laid off all the Grey hairs who used to give us marine forecasts we could count onEh?
02/17/1999 Stormy period next 5 days. Several daze of surf probable.  Great googliemooglie.
02/13/1099   Surf on Saturday Yes there was!
02/02/1999   Tuesday surf alert Nice little unadvertised swell.  Some overhead.  Nat, Dave and Ray ripped.  Some overhead.
02/13/1999   Surf on Saturday Looks good for tomorrow.  Morning high tide and diminishing offshore wind in PM.
01/25/1999   Supersession! Just finished 4 1/2 hours straight at the Avenues today. Overhead, clean, rights and lefts, some big drops.  There are a lot of happy surfers in RI tonight. The first supersession of the winter.  1/23 was excellent also!  There's a swell working.
01/22/1999 Noon Surf anticipation Looks very good for a surf event over  the next several daze but things are quiet at the moment.  Stay tuned.
01/19/1999 3:00 PM Surf Report Swell was occasionally overhead and a lot of shoulder high stuff.  Strong west wind but it was worth it.  Got 4 hours in the water.
01/12/1999 9:00 PM Surf Alert Surf event for early Thursday morning (day after tomorrow).  Winds NE going E.  Should be big. Low tide 10 AM.
01/12/1999 PM Surf Report Duke tipped me off about "weather" on the way and he was right!  Surfed 3 hours (1:30-4:30 PM) at the Avenues with light offshores and both the outer and inner breaks firing.  Outer was overhead; had to be careful.  Hung way outside and nailed quite a few for a change.  It was good.
01/04/1999 AM Surf Report Overhead plus everywhere.  Surf all day today and tomorrow.  Ahhhh, another Monday at the (surf) office. . .
01/03/1999 PM Surf Report It was very big today, completely out of control and winds howling.  Saw 2 guys out being blown backwards . . . Tomorrow morning's offshore Westerly may clean it up.  It will still be big in the morning.
12/30/98 Surf report Chest high this morning.  Do it.
12/29/98   Surf report Surfed 6 1/2 hours at Tunces and 32nd Street.  2 - 5'.  Slept 11 hours straight last night!
12/18/98 Rumor report: The decision behind the attack on Iraq was more than political timing and inspection difficulties: it finally really got down to Y2K:  some of our "smart" weapons won't work after 1/1/2000 so we're going to reduce stockpiles now . .
12/17/98   Surf report: Surfed 12/16 at Tunces in waist high and 12/17 at the Light in chest high and later at 32nd St. in occasional shoulder high.
12/7/98 Carnage report: Computer crash kept me off line for a few weeks.  Back up now.  Coming soon: RIRiders.org and an update to the picture of the week :-) Surfed some really small stuff 12/6 PM at the Town Beach.  Dozens of hungry people chasing too few waves at the Town Beach.  Fortunately, no carnage to report . . .
12/6/98 You've heard, perhaps, of Indian summer.  With the current extended spell of 60 and 70 degree weather in Rhode Island . . .

. . .welcome to Indian Winter

11/17/98   We're into a weather pattern that looks good for surf for the next 5 days.   I'll be out tomorrow for sure. 11/18 Checked all the breaks - only West Tunces was going off.  Sets were waist to shoulder, glassy at noon time and sunny.  Had to be patient but who cares!  All the regulars were there.  Surfed 5 hours straight and shredded a few.
11/10/98   Strong South East gale predicted this afternoon and overnight.  Possible good stuff tomorrow morning. It was big and nasty at the light 11/11 for Nat and Ray. Was a little more civilized at the Avenue. Big Dave was there and  maybe 25 boards.  It was good.
11/10/98 Lost internet access for a few days.  AOL strikes again.  The 11/4-6 surf event (see below) arrived 11/7.  Head high plus swell from Mitch. It was fast and deep at the Light.  I'm outta practice after months of flat water.  Still, some of the locals looked sharp out there.  All I gotta say is consider not cutting back just as you get into the fast portion of the ride.  The view inside a wave is good for about 1/2 second . . .
11/05/98 Is this the worst summer / fall in history for Rhode Island Surf? There has been a surf famine in the state.  Water Bros say "there's no more surf"   Epic periods of flat.  Will remnants of Mitch bring a swell?  Stay tuned . . .
10/31/98 Scored the only surf in the Rhode Island tonight an hour before sun set at Tunces. Wind completely stopped.  Mostly 2' with a rare waist high clean but you had to be excruciatingly patient.  Amazing sun set; I was the only one out when the small sets came.
10/30/98  It's so flat and so windy locally that the ESA contest has been postponed for two weeks, not one. Expect surf in the 11/4 - 6 time frame.  I don't know why.  It's just when everyone gives up that things happen...  You heard it here first.  <See 11/10/98 post>
10/28/98 PM.  The SW wind has kicked up some lines on East facing so tomorrow morning things should be going off.  We'll be there. 10/29/98 We were there.  Checked out all the breaks.  There is a small Easterly swell working but the wind is the issue.  With patience you might find something.
10/23/98 Two thumbs up for RI candidate for Gov. Myrth York's surfing commercial currently airing on television. I expect incumbent Gov. Almond to counter by taking surfing lessons with Pan at The Watershed.
10/19/98 6 straight days of flat water and no surf.  Couldn't we get just ONE of those old fashioned "lows forming off the coast of Cape Hatteras"? Strong westerly wind diminished in PM and the Light had waist to an occasional shoulder high two hours before sunset.  It was very good.  Had it all to myself for the first half hour.  Surfed into darkness.
10/19/98 Appropriate Use of Technology Award - 1998 Winner: Town of Newport for allowing an exclusively "adult video store" in Newport to be located just South of the sewage treatment plant Any future expansions in floor space should be in a Northerly direction
10/14/98 Increased reverse emergency revenue sharing by local towns and cities to the RI State Government has been necessitated by a severe drop off in revenues associated with State Police issued speeding tickets.  It is alleged that the number of "Rhode Island Troopers: always there when you need them" bumper stickers prominently displayed on the rear left quadrant of resident vehicles has been a direct factor in this unprecedented action.

You heard it first right here.

10:15 AM

10/13/98 --  9-12AM.   Surf at Tunces is glassy and waist high. True.   Got in 3 hours today but there were some dry spells.  Lines coming in at the Light but not surfable at 8:30 AM.
10/9/98 -- Surf is waist to shoulder at Tunces.  Clean and offshore wind.  Surfed 3 1/2 hours.  Woof woof.
Tomorrow there will be surf for the weekend warriors.
True.   It was head high 10/10/98 with quite a few bigger sets.  Surfed 4 hours today at two different breaks.
10/5/98 -- Should have surf tomorrow with the NE winds With Great hopes and Fervent expectations #2
9/30/98 -- The 40 degree air temps. predicted for Friday 10/2/98 will chase the last of the kooks out of the water The flat water did everyone in.  Lots of boards at the beach 10/4- resting on top of cars.
9/27/98 -- There has been so little surf this summer that the locals are now calling Head High   --  Double "O" Overheard at the town beach . . ?
9/26/98 -- The water at the Light House tastes and smells like the sewage treatment plant at Scarboro is dumping untreated effluent into the water direct Yeah, TRUE.  Anyone from the EPA listening?
9/26/98 -- 2' mid-week conditions before the East coast surfing championships held at Hatteras were described by one West Coast web site as "12' faces" Sadly enough, this one is TRUE
The good news was that the site was put up by a wave skier and the guy posting this had second hand information.
9/24/98 --  Decent Thursday surf at the south side light The Town beach was 2' and Tunces was knee high but half way in between it was head high to well overhead this morning. Very unusual swell.
September/98 -- Sporadic Watershed surf line reports of "It's a SOLID 1 - 2 feet at the beach" Yup.   Funny reports.
July and August, 1998 -- Water at the mouth of the Narrow River is getting cleaner Wrong.   It still smells.
