John 3:16

Sept. 11, 2001

Only be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them slip from your heart as long as you live.
Deuteronomy 4:9

Did you know that both the RI State Flag and State Seal have an "Anchor" and the word "Hope" in them?  These two items come from the Holy Bible in the Book of Hebrews, chapter 6, verse 19 where it says "We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure." The "hope" and "anchor" are one and the same:
 The Lord Jesus Christ.

People are loading up on Watr and Koker-Koler and Bret and Millk.  I fully expect the first snow flake sighted to prompt both a multiple snow plow pileup on Rt. 95 and an immediate emergency statewide parking ban throughout the state of RI.  The TV weathermen are beginning to believe their own hype.  The real Rhode Island story is this:  Will those who bought First Night Providence Buttons get a refund or will the money go to the Mayor's Marinara Sauce fund?
Me?  I'm wondering if the post storm wind switch to NW will knock down the swell. Stay tuned!

Thursday
There has been surf the last few days.  Today surfed 4 hours at the Haus of lite.  Got in just before low tide. Waves cleaned up and got bigger as time went on.  In a 3 wave set Frederick took an early wave and let me have the hefty wave in the set.  Now I know the Christmas season is here!  Conditions were waist to solid head high in sets with very light SW breeze.  Nice rights today.
This was a really nice session - got one barrel off the upper part of a wave.  Things got a little crowded after lunch time.  Many of the winter surfers were out there today and very few waves went unridden.
Got out of the water and a photographer from the Narragansett Times said he had taken a photo.  I hope he didn't get the closeout with me getting pounded . . . that's the way it usually happens!

Monday
In the water at 2:30PM at Aves and out after sunset.  There were some hefty sets and got closed out once (badda_bing, badda_boom).  Surfed for a while way out at the 3rd reef and had a few nice drops.  It was intense at times and if you weren't slightly over committed to the death zone the wave would go by and under you.
Occasionally that big outside set would close out and send a big foam pile your way but usually the wave would reform in time.
The Money pit was also going off today and, surprise!, people there were very civil towards each other.  Shot some film so will get it up on the site here
                               real_soon_now.
There have been other days in the last week with surf (have gotten many reports of solid head high) and I expect the current trend to continue.  Love that winter surf!

Thursday
Lines coming in at Aves at 2:00 PM so dressed and went out.  About 2:30 PM it cleaned up somewhat and got bigger with the outgoing tide.  Head high sets, decent drops but generally not much shoulder on the waves.  There were a few nice sets before dark with  occasional semi-barrels off the wave tops.  Surfed until dark.  Very few guys out there.

Wednesday
The lite was firing this morning at 9:00 AM.  Nice clean rights, light off shore breeze, waist to head high, sunny, occasional sets that definitely kept you wide awake .  Saw Big Bob out there doing the mandatory water time.  It was fast, just after high tide and good.  Nice to work on the face tan in mid-December. Water temp in the middle 40's (F) now so its winter gear time.  Got in 2 1/2 hours worth with a couple of really nice drops and walls.  Went to sleep once out there and got crushed by a wave wall.  Ugh.  If you're going to day dream do it outside!
Gotta fix that hole in my right hand glove - any leaks now and you will get cold.
12/11/00    After filing a missing persons report for Fred, finally drove to a favorite low tide break at 11:00.  Very few out and it was clean waist.  Lefts and rights.  In 4 hours it got bigger and even cleaner.  Went solid head high + on sets (at takeoff) from 2 PM on.  Really excellent surf - light offshore breeze. Nice little drops.  Classic.  Cool.  Good.  Another Monday at the Office.

Plenty of head high headin' my way,
   Zippedy do da, Zippedy ay
. . . Beach Boys (?)  Ha!
12/05/00    Fairly decent wind swell at the haus of lite that got more blown out as the day went on.  Good at noon time with waist high for the most part with some occasionally bigger stuff as the waves were jacking up on the take off.  The summer crowd is almost all gone now.  Surfed 2 waves with Matt - one intentionally; one unintentionally!
12/01/00    Little lines at the lite with an occasional chest high but mostly knee to thigh.  Fun afternoon session that got smaller as it got later.  It was good to get wet.  Water is about 50 degrees (F) and still feels fairly warm compared to the air temperature.  Hoods needed now.
11/27/00    Amazing morning today.  Got in the water at aves at  8 AM, light offshore wind, really clean and solid head high + and there was no one else out there for the first 45 minutesDr Surf scores big time.  All 3 breaks (reef, outer and inner) were rideable at times.  Some big walls.  A few boards out at PA; someone yelled hello off in the distance but I don't know who it was.  The 3rd reef broke on some sets at high tide!  It was really big at times.  In 4 hours caught a few serious double up set waves for a some insane rides.  The takeoff zone was really tight - you really had to commit to the money pit.  I was dead tired at the end.  Passed out on the beach rock pile with a big smile on my face.  There are a whole lot of happy (and tired) surfers in Rhode Island tonight.
11/26/00 PM    Got wet at 1 PM and got out at 3 for a 2 hour session.  Wind was really intense and at the absolute upper limit of what I can surf in. Saw a half dozen boards out and the same number of kayaks.  Waves were waist to occasional head high but the wind was the whole show.  Horizontal rain felt like ice.  Hard to see.  Winds maybe 30 knots +.  Tomorrow AM should be better with the E - ESE wind going SW and then W.
The goal was exercise and we all got plenty of that!
11/24/00    Severe surf withdrawal symptoms.  Neck hurts . . . slight headache. . . usual perfect attitude is imperfect.
Drove around today looking at some inconsistent solid ankle high.  Had my gear with me just in case. The water is as flat as it gets.
SE wind predicted for the weekend but who knows?  Forecasts change.  Kinda like dimpled chads in the hands of locals.  Without surf it's me that's hanging, bro.
You?
Maybe if I get some surf withdrawal co_misery_ating stories I'll put them up on the fan mail page.
11/15/00    Got up before dawn, wind was light so drove around.  Nothing going on.  Little lines here and there but too small to ride.  Whatever was around last night didn't last until this morning.  It's flat.
11/11/00    Got in 2 surf trips this week: mostly knee to occasional chest.  Fun stuff.  Nothing worth writing up.
Yesterday (11/11) surfed 5+ hours at a favorite break.  Conditions ranged from knee to head high with some quiet spells in between.  Took off outside and came from the backside on one wave.  It was tight but makeable as the wave jacked up.  All of a sudden a guy to my left took off a little late without looking right and I got stuffed and pounded!  That will sure take the starch out of the old shirt I wannatellya.  Still, I'm glad I didn't run him over.  More could be said but this is a family oriented site.  These things happen don't they?
One report that Tres had some nice fast rights.  Swell looks more easterly than southerly today (11/12) so go for it!
11/04/00    Arrived at same break as yesterday and in the water at 7:15 AM.  3 white swans flew overhead as I left the shore.  Glass, no one out, knee to waist high.  Hard to believe I had it all to myself - especially on a Saturday morning!  Lefts and rights working and it got smaller as time went on.  A couple of shoulder highs in 3 hours but mostly "solid knee high".  Good quiet morning to get wet.
11/03/00    Weather forecast at dawn said current winds were 7 MPH from the north so immediately got on the road.  Nice little waist high waves this morning at my favorite low tide break.  Warm & sunny and light off shore breeze.  Surfed with a few other guys out there and it was very good.  Saw the first seal this fall.  Side by side takeoffs and splitting the peak.  Left was a fairly long ride and the right was shorter, tighter and faster.  Lot of fun this AM.  Out of the water by 10:20 AM.  Eddie gave me a wave when I was a little too far inside.  Gracias Senior!
Locked my keys in the vehicle so waited for AAA to bail me out.  Oh well . . . glad it wasn't 20 degrees!
10/31/00    Jeff is out of the hospital after several days.  Wish him a speed recovery.  Water is flat today so rest up.
10/28/00    In the water this morning at 7:15 AM and out by 9:15 AM (wind became too strong).  As I was getting dressed a car pulled up slinging gravel and brakes engaged as he slid to a stop.  Big Jay in a hurry!
Really nice sets coming in at 32nd St.  No wind early on.  Early AM set waves were solid head high plus but it got a little smaller as the wind picked up.  Got blinded on one take off (water spray in the eyes) but went anyways.  When I could see a few seconds later I was dropping into a beautiful wave wall.  A little too deep but the left held up for a long ride.  Exceptionally cool.  Would I have taken off had I been able to see? Hmmm  . . . don't ask; don't tell!
10/27/00    Nice leaden gray occasional waist to shoulder high glass before sunset.  Incredible orange-red sunset and nice little surf.  Got in 2 hours and surfed Tunces into darkness.  Somehow managed a backward clean 270 degree takeoff.  No idea how.
10/26/00    Marine forecasts 36 hours ago said "possible small craft warnings for a large south east swell Friday night." Those words have disappeared from the updated forecast but I'm going to drive around a little later on this Thursday morning.  I smell surf coming soon . . .  Surf withdrawal is setting in.  I need salt water right now . . . croak
5:00 PM - little lines coming in but really small.  Got wet for a few hours.  Thigh high to waist late.
10/19/00    Surfed a couple of hours in those "waist high barrels" that got progressively smaller as the afternoon went on.  Fun sized no stress surfing.  Good time, sharing waves.  No swell from Michael yet.  Tomorrow's predicted 25-30 knot off shore NW winds may knock down any swell.  I don't know but time will tell.
10/18/00    A report of "waist high barrels" at high tide this morning.  I don't understand how one surfs such a wave but the enthusiastic report won me over! Thanks J.
This afternoon saw some knee to waist that was slow moving.  Didn't get wet despite intending to.
10/17/00    Small waves coming in at Tunces in the late afternoon and a very few people out.  Knee to waist high and occasionally rideable.  Got less than a dozen longer rides.  Sky was a leaden winter gray color with occasional drizzle.  Air is getting colder but the water still is fairly warm.
10/08/00    Little lines coming in at the Haus of Lite at noon so got wet for a few hours.  Chest high and diminishing as the afternoon went on. For a while there were too many people out and it was crowded but the people cleared out just as the waves cleaned up! Just rights working.  There have been two other surf events in the last week but I missed them both.  Strong NE winds predicted tomorrow so maybe we'll get a swell from the off shore low.
10/01/00    It is amazing to me that a swell from a hurricane many hundreds of miles away would last for only 12 hours!  At noon time today the light was waist high, closing out and getting smaller with dozens and dozens of boards out and enough carnage to keep the spectators entertained.  :-)  Went to a more "remote" break and caught some legitimate "solid knee high" from 2 - 4 PM.
Sunny afternoon and pleasant no stress waves - a nice way to end the week.  Have about 50 photos of Isaac ready to go as soon as I can get a few hours we'll post them on their own page.
Separate reports from 2 other breaks indicate good surf in the early AM today.
09/30/00
10:10 PM
Isaac swell is definitely here.  At 9 AM the aves third reef was breaking; very big.  I'd call occasional sets in the AM at 2 1/2 to 3 times overhead. It was tense at times . . . The light was double "O".  People at the light were dropping into some serious close outs.  It was too much!  At noon I shot about a half hour's worth of film and have some good stuff for posting "soon".
Surfed in the AM for about 3 hours and the PM for maybe another 3 hours.  Took some of the biggest drops in a long time.  PM it cleaned up and got slightly smaller; supersession in the PM.  There are many Rhode Island surfers going to bed early tonight!
09/29/00    Tunces was mostly flat at noon time.  Hung out getting a tan between waist sized waves every half hour.  No surf yet.
09/28/00    Surfed south side in very small conditions.  Locals are watching and waiting for a swell.  Nothing yet as of 1:00 PM Thursday.  I think we'll get something - it's a matter of being at the right place at the right time . . .
09/26/00    We have been enjoying an extended period of good surf.  Have been on the road for most of the last week.  Conditions ranged from overhead last Wednesday 9/20 to head high Friday 9/22 to chest high Sunday afternoon 9/24 to head high + on Monday 9/25.  Even yesterday there was some overhead at South side and tunces was waist to shoulder with a rare bigger set. The longest session was 9/20 with 5 hours in the water at the Aves., a late lunch break for some Jimmy Dawgs at the light followed by a 3 hour closing afternoon session at the Aves.  On each of the days there were times that the breaks fired bigger and times that you had to be patient.  Some sets on Big Wednesday morning 9/20 were really big (3rd reef was breaking), or more precisely, thunderously closing out.
There is a NE gale offshore now with the wind predicted to drop quickly afterwards so Wednesday 9/27 should be good also.
09/18/00    Surf was great at times recently.  Thursday afternoon (6 hours) 9/14 it was occasionally shoulder high and glassed of in the evening at the light. Saturday noon 9/16  waves were waist high as there was an easterly swell working only at the light.  A short way away it was only occasional waist high. Timely updates here are a few weeks away as the fall work continues.
09/13/00    Watching and waiting for any swell from Hurricane Florence but nothing yet locally from this small hurricane.  Heading out 2 days from now in anticipation of that possibility.
   Surfed
Thursday 9/7 and Saturday 9/9.  Both days had occasional chest high stuff working with a small easterly swell.  Saturday afternoon was the best with the session ending with a lightning storm.  One bolt I could almost feel the concussion from and it scared the devil out of me.
:-)  Got in almost 7 hours those 2 days in the water.  Nailed a few Saturday in a nice session.
Very busy now on fall projects before the surfing season starts so updates here have suffered as a result.  New pictures are needed and once I lower the house back down onto the new foundation it will be possible to spend the time to publish them . . .
09/06/00    There has been almost no surf for several weeks now.  No off shore storms, nada, zip.  We will eventually get some but right at the moment the severe drought continues.  The lack of updates here reflects that lack of surf.
08/22/00    One very quiet fact has been that Alberto has been sending out a small and intermittent swell that is not showing up in the offshore buoy reports which had recently been showing seas at 1 to 2 feet.  Wrong!  The trick is to be at the right break at the right time of day.  In the last 48 hours yours truly enjoyed some glass thigh to occasional shoulder high with a bunch of equally tight lipped surf starved mid-week veterans . . .  Those of you who scored know what I'm talking about.  Those who saw only very flat water do not understand.  Gracias Alberto!
08/15/00    Very small but, hey, why not?  Several hours at tunces looking for anything rideable. Caught a few (very few).
08/13/00    Surfed for hours and hours.  Head high at times.  Apparently the remnants of distant hurricane Alberto.  Whatever the source of the waves, it was good.  Occasionally aggressive summer crowds were out there - I can't wait until October!
08/08/00    Surfed early AM at Tunces for maybe 3 hours.  Had the place mostly to myself as it was under waist high.  Rideable waves though. One shoulder high wave an hour (caught 3!) After lunch went to the light where it was a little cleaner and put in a few more hours.  Fun sized no stress surfing.  Summer crowds.
Had a few other small sessions since 7/26 but didn't write them up.  Too hot to sit at the keyboard . . .
07/26/00    Well, I went for the fake from the weather guys at NOAA and there was nothing there.  The forecasts of 3-6' did not materialize.  They confused a '  with "  Caught maybe 2 chest highs but mostly it was "not so solid knee high".  Dr Surf does not score.  Stay tuned my fellow surf junkies.
07/18/00    Surfed the light from noon 'til 2 or so with Tom and then from 6 'til 8 PM.  Mid_day conditions became blown out but the evening was occasionally good (for summer conditions that is).  Waist high plus.  Grabbed at least one of Russ's waves since Fred wasn't there . . .
07/16/00 Sun AM
(updated 07/17 AM)
Missed Church for the first time in several years to meet Nathan at Tunces at 8:15 AM.  It varied, over the course of 4 hours, from waist to almost solid head high (on the takeoff).  There were some fairly good waves mixed in among the closeouts and mush.  Light wind and sunny. Got an e-mail from Nova Scotia talking about the lack of waves at Narragansett and all the disappointed people!  Where we were there were too many smiling people.  Got in 7 1/2 hours water time between Sat. evening and Sunday noon.
07/15/00 Sat PM
(updated 07/17 AM)
Checked out a few breaks but nothing was happening.  Had given up when Matt quietly insisted he was going out in the late afternoon to SSB (secret storm break). I did some errands and then drove down to the coast around 5:30 PM.  Windy, heavy rain and some occasional rideable waves.  Caught an occasional shoulder high.  It wasn't very clean at times but definitely good.  Surfed into darkness.
07/11/00    Predictions of the demise of the swell by this morning have been greatly exaggerated. In the early AM there was no wind and decent clean waves. Surfed south side and points in between.  Varied from waist to occasional solid head high.  Surfed 8-1 PM. It was pointed out to me by a certain local (Fred) that I was catching his waves.  Soon figured out that a "Fred wave" was head high and clean.  So, I caught one of Fred's waves.  Excellent wave.  Good call Fred!  And good morning to the light and south side locals. :-)
07/10/00    It was flat at dawn at the beginning of the surf week this Monday but by late morning it was waist to head high. Excellent summer surf - got in maybe 5 hours.  All the winter surfers were out there.  Lotta sick time on the books apparently . . . it should be illegal to be cooped up in an office when conditions are that good.  Bright summer day with lots of surf.  A great day to be alive.
06/23/00
(Posted 6/25)
Surfed Tunces for a few hours in the AM in waist high but uneven waves.  No one else out.  After lunch traveled to the Point for 2 more hours in an occasional (rare) head high but set waves were mostly waist. Nailed one bigger wave and remembered that tension that comes in hurricane season (will_I_makeit?) Excellente for June!  Jeff, Jay and other many other regulars were there.
Missed 6/24 but Nate's e-mail says it was rideable in the PM. 6/25 -  it's flat again.
06/20/00    Have caught a few (very few) very small days since 6/6 but mostly it has been flat.  This is the slow time of year - catching up on the painting, maintenance, that sort of thing.  Lots of correspondence with folks looking for lessons; the usual questions.  It's good to hear from the surfing community and know that there is a steady supply of groms learning how to surf.
This is the time to have a beer, give the bbq a workout and close your eyes and just enjoy sweating.  It will be overhead and 30 degrees soon enough!   Updates to this site slow down this time of year. . .as things pick up we'll update more often.
06/06/00    Some small stuff at a local winter break.  14 guys out and a small take off zone.  Still, there were waves so it was cool.
06/05/00    Current forecast (if you can trust it) looks good for some surf in the next 48 hours. Depends on how close the gale tracks to the coast . . . I'll be there just in case :-)
05/31/00    Waves weren't that bad at the town beach - got in a few hours in the late afternoon.  Waist high with the usual close outs.  It's summer though: lots of bodies in the water and you basically have to surf an through an obstacle course!
05/23/00    Caught a few hours of occasional waist high.  Wind came up and finally ended the session.  Summer season is upon us so it's slow go now until hurricane season in the fall.
05/11/00

Unadvertised special
Crawled out of the water at 2:30 PM after a 6 hour session.  It went from waist to head high to "where did that come from?"  Newport was reporting less than a foot high this early AM but I was a desperate man.  Drove to the light and "what to my wondering eyes should appear" but some occasional waist high.  It was all uphill from there.  By noon it was cranking and very clean.  Excellente!  Hi Jeff!
04/29/00    Surfed 5 1/2 hours in maybe waist high.  In a few weeks waist high will seem like overhead after the summer flat water gets here. (posted 5/6/00)
   PS - it's here now.
Getting lots of questions about where surf breaks are now. . . See FAQ page about this. (FAQ #9)
04/26/00
Supersession
Super day at a well known local break.  Got in the water at 12:30 and out at 5:00 PM.  Went from waist to chest to head high and then it really went off.  Wind dropped, really clean surf - both rights and lefts.  Some big sets.   Caught a few really nice drops and had one of those days of unconscious surfing - lucking out; avoiding close outs, waves holding up on too deep a takeoff.  Excellente!  Gracias Senor!
Steve was out with an 11' gun.  He needed it on a few sets.
04/22/00    The predicted sustained 25-35 knot winds turned into glass just after noon.  Nice waves, beautiful day (but very foggy). Dave and Nathan showed up and we surfed together for the first time since?  Guys are starting to shed the hoods as things are warming up.  Can't wait till it's bathing suit time.
04/19/00   Been away for the last 4 days in a row so this site has been neglected.  Heard about some decent surf yesterday (04/18) but didn't see it myself.  Surfed maybe 3 1/2 hours today at 32nd St. It was small - mostly knee to waist with a rare chest high.  Every time a set went through the wind would really pick up and roar! A max of 5 guys out at one time.  I wonder if Tunces was any better.  Still, still, it was nice to get wet.
04/16/00 - Nate reported nice surf at the light - long rights.
04/10/00 PM    We will award bonus style points to the first person who spots someone surfing without a wet suit this spring.  It's just a matter of time now with water temps. in the low 40's (F)
Matt wins the bonus style points. See his 04/17/00 report here.
04/10/00    3 1/2 hours in the water today.  It varied from knee - waist high to head high.  Nice sunny day.  Windy at the light.  Surfed Aves, PA and the light today.
4/09 was big at Monnies and 40 MPH.  I didn't see it myself but heard that there was some 1 1/2 overhead.
04/04/00    Overhead again both at the light and Aves.  Couldn't do much at the light (windy and not too clean) so went over to the Aves again.  Surfed 4 hours in some clean head high.
04/03/00    Overhead in PM.  Foggy late.  Got in 3 + hours and mostly had the Aves to myself!  Nailed one wave with a half stroke, drop, and serious focus on a wall of water.  Couldn't acknowledge the hoot; was focused on not dying . . .  Made it clean thankfully.
03/30/00    3 1/2 hours at Aves today.  Really nice out there - mostly waist high but a rare head high now and then.  Sunny day, diamond studded waves reflecting the morning sun.  No stress cruzing.  Perfect day at the office.  The swell should be gone tomorrow.
Saw Russ out there yesterday for the first time since last fall and Fred today.  Spring has certainly sprung!  Welcome back to the line up guys.
03/29/00    Monnies and 40 MPH were going off this morning and the Aves cleaned up in the late morning.  Nailed a few excellent waves today.  Caught one in particular way too deep behind an overhead peak, took off diagonally and made it clean.  Very lucky :-)  Shot video in the AM so it will be available as soon as time permits . . .  Excellent session today
03/23/00    Surfed the Light for hours, also PA and the Aves.  Point was head high and some solid overhead sets.  Lots of boards out.  Plenty of rights to go around.  Nailed a few bigger waves.  Really excellent surf.  This is the fifth straight day of decent surf.  Will it end tomorrow?  Stay tuned!
03/22/00    Surfed 32nd St. for 3 hours.  Mostly waist to chest but there were a couple of sets that were really nice. Clean lefts.  Some flat spells too.
03/21/00    In the water at Tunces at 9:15 AM.  Just a few boards out.  Occasional big sets but generally not very clean.  Missed the wave of the day - a double O with a long clean drop.  I was about 50 feet inside (diagonally) from considering a take off. Had I been there I still might have hesitated.
Caught occasionally decent waves for 3 hours and then went in and drove over to 32nd St. for an hour or so.  A whole lot smaller there but clean.  Caught a couple of shoulder highs between long waits.  The right was also firing.  Getting back into shape after 3 straight days in H20.
03/20/00    3 1/2 hours at 32nd St. in shoulder high.  Had several extended flat periods but it was fun while it lasted.  One nice big set wave in the session.  Got lucky and scored. How sweet it was to get in some decent back to back 180 degree moves.  Shades of hurricane season.  Maybe a dozen boards out.  Forecast keeps changing so who knows how long the waves will last.  Should be some in the AM.
Buoy 44025 is back on line with wave data after being down for months.  9.2 feet every 8 seconds right now.  Decent.
03/19/00    Surfed almost 3 hours at Tunces yesterday (Saturday) into darkness.  Mostly chest high with a few flat spells.  There have been a few other days with good surf (one overhead) but had two (non-surfing) friends die this last week so have been focused on eternal types of issues almost exclusively rather than surfing.
Should be several surf events in the coming week based upon the current marine forecast of prolonged Easterly winds.
03/13/00    Reports of good surf yesterday (Sunday).  Unfortunately, I was out of town.  Heard the light was fairly foggy.  Most boarders were further up the coast.
03/10/00    One board out at the light; medium sized surf but there were a lot of closeouts.  Swell working. Got dressed hoping it would clean up but it didn't.  Did a drive around and the Aves. were pretty good.  A lot smaller but clean and no one out.  Caught a lot of waves.  The wind stopped for a while; beautiful sunny day, sparkling water.  Had to be patient and then you would be too far inside!  A few decent sized waves despite the tide.  It was great to have the place to myself.  A wind switch to the NE ended the session.
03/09/00    There was fun sized surf at the town beach so got in a couple of hours.
03/02/00    This morning was an unadvertised special at Tunces.  Had to be patient but it was mostly waist high with a few bigger sets,  Glassy at first then a light southerly breeze.  Excellent little session.  In the last week there have been some waves now and then and surfed one day but didn't update the site here.  Lotsa other projects going on at the moment.
02/24/00    Little rideable stuff at the Town Beach today so went out for 2 1/2 hours.  Not bad at all.  Haven't surfed there in ages.  Biggest was waist high.  60 degrees and hazy sun in February ain't bad!
02/19/00    Almost forgot to post this (posted 2/25).  32nd St. - outside was firing occasionally.  Mostly waist to chest.  Caught one nice overhead set wave in 3 hours - saw it coming way off and charged outside and diagonally.  Barely nailed it for a decent ride. Cold and icy day.
02/15/00    Morning was fairly big but windy and tide was low.  Came back after lunch and the Aves were firing mostly waist high.  Surfed there several hours until it went flat and then paddled over to the Point.  Chest to head high, nice stuff in late afternoon.  Clean. Patiently waited out the occasional head high sets.  Went back to a spot (PA) that rarely fires and surfed an occasional screaming overhead (on the takeoff).  Excellent and very clean. Bright sunny day, light offshore wind dropped in afternoon.  In water at 12:30; out at 5:30 - wet for 5 hours.  Excellent surf, nice afternoon.  Tired.
02/12/00    (Posted 2/14) Tunces was small but I went out anyway.  Over several hours caught an occasional chest high.  I was a little rusty after almost a 2 week layoff.  Three kayaks and no boards out.  It was generally "solid knee high" with a set every 10 minutes.  Slow and e_ze ridin'.
01/31/00    Avenues were going off so surfed from 2 PM 'til dusk.  Outer break was closing out a long ways out but the wave would reform and was occasionally rideable.  Not much of a shoulder on the wave so it was a challenge.  Big, a lot of water and not a consistant takeoff zone . . but . . it was good.  Overhead conditions.
01/26/00    The morning swell was rapidly dying at Monies and at 40MPH by 1:30 PM.  Other spots were closing out and no one was out elsewhere.  Weird that the avenues were closing also but that's the way it was.  Lots of vehicles driving around in PM looking for something clean.
01/25/00    Got in 3 hours at 32nd St.  Wind was intense - marginally negotiable at times.  There were some occasional breaks from the wind and when that happened conditions were solid head high.  This was No Paddle Tuesday - the wind blew you right back out for another go around.  Got blown off a few waves.
01/24/00   No surf 1/23 (yesterday) but it was mostly waist high today at Tunces.  Morning was best.  An average of 6 boards out most of the day and the regulars were out.  Surfed 10:30 - 3:00.  Glassed off mid-afternoon and the small swell dropped way off. It was good to be out there today.  Looks good for tomorrow from around mid-day on.  Predicted Northeast 25-35 knots.
01/21/00    It has been one storm after another but the winds immediately shift to the NW @ 40 + knots and temps drop near 0 (F).
Mr. Wizard is going out on a limb and predicting a decent 2 day surf event within the January 23, 24, 25 time frame.  Depending on how this turns out, you either did or didn't hear it here first.
01/11/00    Got in 2 hours this morning.  Tide was high so the outer break at avenues fired only occasionally but  there were some fairly decent sets when it did and nice drops on the takeoff.  Got very windy at the end so I got out a little earlier than usual. There's a swell working.
01/06/00    Checked out all the spots.  It's flat.  Biggest I saw was solid knee high maybe every 10 minutes.
01/05/00    At 9:00 this morning it is booming.  Beach was small, monnies is occasionally breaking shoulder high and the light is waist to head high with occasional sets at 1 1/2 overhead.
I got dressed only to discover a 12" rip in a neoprene seam which was a full 10 count knockout punch.  Surf shops don't open til 10 AM so I waited around, got the cement and went home. Oh well.  I hope there is something left tomorrow morning . . .
01/04/00    Nothing happening out there at present.  Did the circuit this morning and the good news is that conditions are building.  Maybe tonight or tomorrow?
01/03/00    Checked out all the breaks and got in the water at the light.  Predicted 30 knot wind did not happen (almost calm winds) and the mid 60's temperature (F) compared to the usual 28 or so was decent!  You had to be at the right place at the right time - but it was rideable.  Average set wave was maybe chest but the take_offs were a lot bigger.  Was wet for several hours and got out before dark.
12/30/99 (Posted 1/1/2000)    Been a busy time.  Had time to surf but not talk about it here :-)   Was working on the firewood in the afternoon when all of a sudden the big winds stopped.  Grabbed my gear and drove to avenues at 2 PM.  Some decisions are too easy . . .
Diminishing winds at the coast; waist to occasional head high with 2 other guys out.  Finally the wind stopped and it glassed off.  Surfed into darkness.  Very good session / very clean lefts and rights.  There was surf 12/31 but I missed it.
