John 3:16

Sept. 11, 2001

Only be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them slip from your heart as long as you live.
Deuteronomy 4:9

Did you know that both the RI State Flag and State Seal have an "Anchor" and the word "Hope" in them?  These two items come from the Holy Bible in the Book of Hebrews, chapter 6, verse 19 where it says "We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure." The "hope" and "anchor" are one and the same:
 The Lord Jesus Christ.

For an opinion (not mine) on the Narragansett 5 Day wave forecast go here

You may have surfed today but the experience isn't complete until you find out how good it was by reading about it here. :-)
If you don't see any updates for a while then there's probably no surf :-(

or, it's one and a half, and I'm on the road until it dies out  :-)

Date Comments:

12.25.03
Thursday
Nice little Christmas swell out there.  At the ocean before dawn and waited for it to get light enough to see.  Surfed maybe 2 1/2 hours.  Back home now and almost time for Christmas dinner so this update is, of necessity, short!  Merry Christmas everyone!
12.19.03
Friday
Yesterday there were waves but the wind was the thing that kept me out of the water.  Watched intermittently for a couple of hours while getting caught up on my reading.
Surfed today from 8 until noon in a dying Easterly swell.  Every now and then a nice wave would come through.  It was fun to drop deep into the wave shadow with that low winter sun out there now.  25 degrees (F) this AM so doubled up on the long underwear under the dry suit.  It's starting to feel a lot like Christmas!  Should be flat through the entire weekend . . .

Friday

Supersession
It was Goin' Off today!  Surfed 9 AM to 1:15 PM at a secret break known only to half the locals in RI.  Solid drops, intimidating at times, but classic Rhode Island Juice.  I got the best barrel in several years on a nice coverup and I saw a bunch of guys Ridin' today.  The session turned into a hoot fest and the stoke was everywhere.  The secret was to overcommit to the drop that visually looked like a close out with you being the meat in the middle!  The wind held the faces up so it worked . . . I saw Mike get a nice ride as well as several others.  If you worked today, then, on behalf of all of us that had the day off - Thank You!  I have put away the 3/2 for the winter and am using the dry suit.  Water still isn't that cold yet (unless you get caught inside, that is) . . .
12.07.03
Sunday
If you surfed this storm then you were a local.  No one else could get out of their driveways! Here in the swamp we've got several feet of snow on the roof and surfing is not first on the "to do" list.  Instead, it's getting the snow blower fired up so that we can get to the main road.  Broke a shear pin (minor deal if you have a replacement handy) yesterday afternoon so that gets fixed first.  Some times you can't see the waves because of the drifts . . .
12.03.03
Wednesday
Marine forecasts are all over the place for the weekend storm.  Last night it was 11-19'; today 6-11'.  I'm happy with the forecast wave size but it's the wind that will be the problem.  Big wind on the way . . .
Watching and waiting in RI . . .
11.30.03
Sunday
Surfed today for about 3 hours in a diminishing swell from yesterday's windstorm.  Knee to waist high - just good to get wet.  Had 2 other sessions since the last update 10.21 but looks like I didn't get around to writing them up!
10.21.03
Friday
At noon time the wind swell was gone.  (posted 10.22 AM)
10.20.03
Thursday

Surfed the ranch for about 3 hours today in occasional solid head high (sets).  Wind was a big factor with some intense gusts but every now and then it slowed down a bit and then it was OK.  Was out there with Wolfman J. for a while and we never had more than a half dozen guys out there at one time.  There was a definite swell working today with a few horizon benders.  I wore a hood today for the first time this fall due to the wind (30 knot gusts).  Worn out at the end and got out of the water at 2:30 PM.  Good to get wet today.
10:29.03
Wednesday
Late afternoon the water cleaned up and there were some great waves.  At sunset it became super clean and I surfed into the darkness.  The sunset was really incredible - sky was lit up all the way across and there was the bottom part of a rainbow at the eastern horizon.  It was as if the sun were in the eastern sky behind the clouds, and not in the west.  Perfect.
10.25.03
Saturday AM
There have been some waves here and there but I've been involved in several projects and missed them all.  I can tell you that my gear is stowed and ready to go if, to my wondering eyes, a swell should appear.  It has been overcast and cold for several days so that should help thin out the bodies out there.
10.11.03
Saturday PM
The ranch was going off all day and my shift was from 11 - 3:00 PM.  It was really firing at times and I saw Russ, Dave, Paul, Josh, Mike and many others out there.  The summer surfers are dwindling in numbers so when someone went for a wave it was a lock.  It ranged from waist to head high with a few sets that were bigger.  A great session, good vibe, and plenty of waves.
Boston marine weather seems to be less accurate these days than perhaps 2 years ago.  Their forecast typically is not an accurate measure of surf conditions locally . . .
10.04.03
Saturday
Got in 2 days surfing (since 9/27) but never got them into this log.  Nice, shoulder high, clean.  Been working on shingling a roof so updates here have been sparse. I believe man was made to surf, not shingle!  Calluses are earned, aren't they?
09.27.03
Saturday
Tomorrow (Sunday) looks good.  Was up shingling a roof the last 3 days . . . Bermuda was not on the radar scope until yesterday.
09.20.03
Saturday
Surfed the remnants of Isabel swell for a number of hours.  Perfect late summer day: sunny, water glassy at times, water still warm.  Hope you enjoyed it too!
09.18.03
Noon Time
Drove to 4 different breaks this morning but nothing much is going on.  Some are blown out by the wind and more protected ones are closing or else there is not much of a clean wall.  Saw 2 kayaks out playing in the white water near shore and that is about the best bet today.  I suspect there is surf somewhere but not in the usual places.
Separately, the increase in out of state plates on cars has been resolved.  I received one (mean) email suggesting this web site was the cause of this.  Actually, a source today identified the real cause: a small group of people posing as locals on an internet chat group talking up all the local breaks.  Real locals surf; they don't talk about surfing in the various forums . . .
09.17.03
AM
The Isabel swell continues to build but is forecast to be huge in 48 hours.  I expect to be watching it but I'm not too sure about being in it!  If you have a secret spot not vulnerable to 30K SE winds and 10 miles inland you just might go for it!  I advise caution . . . Meanwhile, today might just be the day to secure things around your house or apartment.  If the storm should shift to a more northerly direction tie your board to something solid in the basement.
09.16.03 PM    Had no plans to surf last night (Monday 9/15) but it was medium big with a fat wave period so we did the right thing!  Tons of people for a Monday night 2 hours before sun set. Surf was excellent but the inside was just filled with bodies and one summer (bathing suit only, loud and snaking) surfer.  Slightly pulled a rib cage muscle (I need to warm up before going out!) so took a nice right to the beach and called it a night after 2 waves.  Just as well.  I'm really looking forward to the heavy rubber weather.  Fred, it has taken 11 years but I now fully understand why you prefer the winter season!
09.13.03
PM
Henri surf was fairly small and the wind from the East made some breaks blown out.  Surfed Friday and Saturday in average sized to small surf.  From a winter surf viewpoint, this "storm" was mostly irrelevant.  We've been looking at the satellite photos of Isabel and were kinda blown away by the size of the eye of the storm.  A beautiful and dangerous hurricane.  Hope it stays out to sea . . .
09.10.03
PM
Looks fine in the near future.  The 09.05 guess_timate is looking good right now.
09.06.03
Saturday PM

Supah Session!

Huge at times today.  Surfed about 3 hours in the AM and another 2 in the PM.  Caught the biggest wave in maybe 3 years today - a left that was way up there.  Later on I got caught inside (although I was way out) and got hammered by the lip coming down.  Full sinus flush. Yesterday I was fortunate to make a similar sized right at a different break.  Big drops today. Have a bunch of film that will show up here as time permits editing it.
Huge at times today.  When I close my eyes I see waves.  Way up there.  Full on stoke tonight plus a sun burned face that feels like hot toast.
Met Joe who pulled my buddy Nathan out of the water at 40 MPH in February several years ago.  He had been dressed in street clothes and went into the water to grab Nathan (dislocated knee) by the (dry suit) shoulder with one hand while some how holding onto a rock with the other.  Came home iced over and went right into the shower, clothes and all, to warm up.  Guys like Joe are heroes in my eyes.
Rhode Island was "parking space challenged" today, wasn't it?
I was asked about a kayaker at the Haus this morning who was seen in the water and separated from boat and paddle but I don't know what happened.  Hope the guy is OK.
And I hope you enjoyed this 3 day swell !
09.05.03
Friday PM

Excellent Session
Completely stoked and sun burnt this evening after a 6+ hour day on the water at two different breaks.  Spent the morning at a break that I haven't been at for a long time - thought I'd try something new and so we traveled to the Ranch.  Solid head high and some long rides. In the afternoon went over to the haus for a few Jimmi Dawgs where it was good but a bit crowded at times.  Solid Friday on the water.  A localfest today - I saw JT and the M&M man smiling!
If you worked today and weren't out there . . . thank you
09.05.03
Friday AM
For what it's worth, it's possible that the little storm over Florida may produce more surf next week than Fabian since it may be closer to us.
Generally speaking, waves yesterday weren't very clean and there were a lot of summer bodies soaking inside.
I saw Mike nail two nice waves yesterday and Fred was gittin' some too (considering that he took almost a year off).  All the locals were hanging out except for Dave (who I didn't see on my shift).  There is a whole lot of water with higher than usual tides at the moment.  Be really careful Saturday as not everyone out there is skilled the way they are in 34 degree March water.
09.04.03
Thursday 7:00 AM
Currently the cams are down, the marine changed overnight from 5-8' to 2-4' and another web site that forecasts swells is down (at the very moment everyone is checking to see if what they predict is true!) then you know something is up.  It's not business and posturing as usual when a big storm is on your doorstop.
The truth?  Elusive as always when it comes to worldly things; but I digress. . . I'll be on the road for the next 3 days.  I remain ever hopeful as the wave period lengthens . . .
08.26.03
Wednesday
AM
It remains flat.  What can I say?  Well: my gear is dry; surf related email is almost zero and the Caribbean is clear all the way to Africa.  If you're a sail boarder then the predicted on shore breeze the next few days should be an encouragement!
08.20.03
Friday
AM
Well, we're in a dry spell for waves right now.  Watching and waiting but really quiet.  Earlier advance forecasts for a storm developing off Africa have been scaled back when it didn't develop.  Locally there will be waves offshore but it's anybody's guess if they will reach the coast.  Probably not because they're associated with the beginning of fall NW winds.  Looks to be flat for a while . . .  Hope I'm wrong!
08.11.03
Monday PM
There has been a whole lot of surf this last week despite the lack of updates here.  We've had a pretty consistent South swell working the last 6 days.  Today is probably the last of it for a while.  I'm really looking forward to less crowded conditions in October.  Was in the water this afternoon for maybe 3 hours or so.  A fair number of locals out there today but I think some of them are hiding out until October 1st or thereabouts!  Saw Josh nail a nice right wall near the end of the session.
08.04.03
Tuesday AM
The early call for mid-week surf continues to look good and for that to continue at least through Friday.  Wind from the South is unfavorable but that is an observation, not a complaint!  I expect to be on the road from Wednesday on so updates here may be limited in that time period.  Have fun and save me a few.  Give away a few waves, especially in the late afternoon to the guys getting out of work.
07.27.03
Sunday PM
AM: Looks like little summer type wind waves today.
PM: Wind was a little too strong and rideable waves didn't happen although I did see a small group of boards getting some rideables for about a half hour. I hung in there from 12:30 until 4:00 PM but zilch.  Saw a couple of miniature kayaks riding the white water but no boards out there.  Got a little reading done and a short nap!  Nice to have a quiet Sunday watching the water with that cool SW wind.  Must have been hot in the city today . . . Ate dinner at Charlie O's and went home.
07.25.03
Friday
PM
Third straight day of surf.  Several hours in kinda bumpy surf with an occasional wall that held up.  It was very simple:  take off and if the wall holds up down the line: cool.  If it doesn't hold up, then don't catch that wave . . . think about it.  Yesterday was the best but I expected this morning early would have been good.  I couldn't get out until 1:00 PM today.  Good session - my sun burn has sun burn.  An occasional rare solid head high today.
07.24.03
Thursday
PM
Found a little out of the way break today after noon time and surfed maybe 3 1/2 hours.  Clean, occasional head high but the take off zone had an occasional set wave that was bigger.  Excellent session - sun burned face.  Forgot my bathing suit and rash guard at home so surfed in my clothes (pants and shirt).  An odd looking guy for an odd job, I'd say!
07.23.03
Wednesday PM
It was goin' off today.  Waves were thick so you had to over_commit to the drop or else they went right under you.  An occasional close out kept the session with the right flavor of tension.  It was crowded but the lack of a consistent take off zone spread people out except for the short board group who kept dropping in on each other! Why do they do that?
Nailed a couple of drops (got lucky) but didn't catch the usual quota of rides.  Later on I went to a different break <dead end> and, amazingly,  had it all to myself.  Caught 2 of the longest and cleanest rides of the day here.
Excellent session once you got used to the conditions.  Definitely not a day to go asleep out there.  Swell is bigger tonight so the AM should be good.
07.22.03
Tuesday PM
In the water today around 1:00 PM and surfed for 2 hours.  Surfed with the Bob_meister and Wolfman "J".  Conditions were occasionally waist high but not clean and kinda random.  It was good to get wet but the real stuff should be here Wednesday through Thursday morning.
07.21.03
Monday
AM
Best advance forecast I've seen in a long time for rideables most of this week.  The optimism is returning!
07.20.03
AM

Hurricane Swell
The marine forecast yesterday was unimpressive but something caught my eye:  a long wave period.  Whoa thar podner: hurricane Danny swell!  On the road and arrived at 4:00 PM.  Lines; waves; no one out there.  Got the gear, into the water, fought my way outside through the tenacious onslaught.  Had it all alone for a solid hour.  Ripping.  Eventually 2 others joined me and we split some solid peaks - lefts and rights.  Just at sunset the set of the day came through. I saw it first and paddled out and over first to nail a solid drop on that thigh high set wave.  What a rush!  What a session.  RI Locals: you missed it!
07.17.03
Thursday PM
Took a little spur of the moment trip to Tunces this late morning when what to my wondering eyes should appear . . . surf that was thigh high but no bottles of . . . er, forget it.  Little rideables every now and then on a bright sunny and warm day.  Nice to get wet.
The ocean looks to be going flat for a while with the outside chance of a long swell late in the weekend.
07.15.03
update of Saturday
Friday afternoon was rideable and I got in a few hours worth but the swell arrived Saturday.  Surfed many hours in both the morning and the afternoon on Saturday.  There were some solid drops if you were at the right place at the right time.  Had a few really tight vertical walls, all rights; biggest were solid overhead on the takeoff.  Not all areas were breaking nor clean in this South swell.  I wasn't able to surf today (Sunday) but it looks like there were some leftovers today.  It has been a long time since I was able to make some decent drops down good sized waves in the month of July!
07.11.03
Friday AM
Current forecasts show waves off shore but not reaching the shore locally.  I'm watching and hoping but nothing as of 7:00 AM.  Best time will be after 1:30 today and possibly tomorrow morning if you feel lucky.
07.05.03
Saturday
Surfed July 4th for a total of 8 hours in a long morning shift and a shorter afternoon session.  Many waves, many people.  Most surprisingly, the vibe out there was good despite all the bodies.  Caught some nice waves yesterday in conditions that were mostly waist high with bigger sets.  No real clean take off zone.  Completely wiped out by late afternoon but hung in there to watch the July 4th fireworks coming from Old Mountain Field in Wakefield.
This morning at 5:00 AM there were thigh high waves at the haus and it might get a little bigger with the tide shift.
06.20.03
Friday
Nice little waves this morning.  Head high on take off and waist down the line.  Caught 2 that were bigger down the line.  2 hours in the water this morning.  Sunny.  wind was off shore early and then switched to the east at the end.
06.14.03
Saturday
Went out, not because there were waves, but because I just needed to get wet!  Surfed boat wakes for a time but in the late afternoon for a time there was actually an occasional set that was definitely rideable.  Had a good time out there despite the dry spells where it went flat.
06.11.03
Wednesday
Did the drive around on Monday evening (06.09.03) but I just couldn't get excited by what I saw so didn't get wet.  Maybe chest high but no juice so it was crumbling like a beach break.  Few people out everywhere I checked but no one was really doing anything.
Was hoping to surf tonight but, again, the water is under whelming.  Looks like we're solidly into the summer flats now.  Lawn mowing time.  This winter had the least surf out of the last 10 years.
06.02.03
Monday
Much smaller today. Surfed 3 different breaks this evening with the Haus being the best.  Went over to short board alley and nailed one fast head high.  That was the only one cause the next time 2 short boarders both cleanly picked my picket making my good take off look like a late drop in!  There are some guys who can rip in that section.  No problem.
Ended up back at the starting point with Dave sharing those rare chest highs and surfing into a sun set that was beautiful.
06.01.03
Sunday
PM
Excellent!
Did a drive by at 1:00 PM but wind was NE and water choppy.  Came back at 5:00 PM, the wind was now off shore and it was firing - all points, reefs and breaks!  Surfed until 8:00 PM tonight with the best from about 5:30 - 7:00 PM.  Occasional sets were 1 1/2 with a nice drop if you weren't too far inside! Mostly chest to head high, super clean.  Vibe was good out there and no one went hungry tonight.  Perfect.  Stoked.
05.30.03
Friday PM
Been away in Washington, DC for 9 days so this site has not been updated during that time.  Checked the marine and saw 2.3' with 1-3' forecast but there was a long wave period so headed out anyway, gear in vehicular.  Haus was small but I was a desperate man so went out and surfed boat wakes for a while.  Later on there was a definite wave coming in every so often and it got better.  At the end set waves were chest high so DR. Surf scores again!  Even saw Monstah Mon heading out there.  Nice 5 hour session.
05.17.03
Saturday PM
Surfed several hours today.  Saw John out there and several others.  Varied between knee to chest high at times.  Sunny day but air temp. was cool for mid-May.  Afterwards Mike drove up as I was changing out of the 3/2.  "You should have been here 2 hours ago!  It's flat now.  Go get a cheeseburger instead."  I said.  He wasn't buying it but this was one of those rare times where it was true.  Lots of guys going for waves but missing.  The summer crew is getting back into shape after being out of the water since last fall.
05.16.03
Friday
AM
Been a flat week.  We were savoring the early marine forecasts a few daze ago but each successive forecast shows smaller and smaller surf.  Currently it's 2-4 (what else is new?) in an easterly "swell".  My idea of a "swell" is 4-10 lasting for 5 straight days but what do I know . . .  Anyway, based upon the current forecast, best bet is evening time on the incoming but certainly don't sell the farm and buy a log with the profit.  Instead get a lawn mower; you'll get more exercise and there will be something to show for your effort!
05.08.03
Late
Wednesday update
Yesterday there was a nice little swell working in the fog so I left the house at 7:30 AM for a half day on the road.  1 car in the lot when I arrived.  Saw Mike and we looked it over and then decided to go for it.  Eventually there were about 15 people out there but there were several defined take off zones.  We're seeing the beginning of the summer crowd behavior with people suddenly inexplicably moving this way or that in unison or else hanging out below the drop and nearly getting run over!
It was a good session yesterday and I got back home around 3:30 PM.  Another week or so and it will be 3/2 weather.  I didn't wear a hood yesterday but everyone still has gloves on.
05.03.03
Saturday
PM
er . . . saw a possibility of a small receding swell so went to tunces after lunch and OK!  Little thigh high with a rare shoulder high and rideable.  Surfed about an hour and a half until the wind changed from light offshore to medium on shore and at that point it chopped out.  First time out this year without gloves or 7 mil hood so it was nice to hear the water again!  Working on that "whole face" tan once more.
05.03.03
Saturday
AM

flat again

Hung out yesterday afternoon (at the lite) for 2 hours.  Water glassed off but it was knee high or less.  Saw an occasional thigh high closing out as I washed and waxed the surfmobile.  It was good to be in shorts and a short sleeved shirt for the first time this year.  Josh did a drive by and said "Tomorrow?"  "Maybe" I answered.  Well, it's now Saturday and I see that the marine forecast is now 1-3' and the link I put up to buoyweather (top of this page) shows 5' which is wrong.  I'll give that link a few more weeks.  It the forecasts are even close to reality I'll leave it up.  Otherwise it will get fed to the dead link file.
   Time for the
annual "Blue Kook" contest:  If you spot someone out there in a bathing suit and no rubber send me a mail and I'll recognize you here if you are the first.  Include location and circumstances.  Later.
05.02.03
Friday 9:25 AM
I check the forecasts every day but invariably (this winter) it has been "more of the same".  One of the best years for surf (winter 2002) has been followed by one of the worst (fall/winter/spring 2003).  I don't remember a single legitimate 12' clean day this year although there have been occasional random waves like that.  We remain in the "watching, waiting and hoping" mode at present with "gear loaded but cobwebs growing"!
04.27.03
Sunday

Good session!
Didn't get into the water until 4:00 PM and surfed just under 2 hours.  Looks like it was better earlier in the day but even this late in the afternoon I had some solid drops and decent walls - the biggest in a while. Everything was going off today.  Heard Tunces was perfect earlier in the day: hollow, fast and not closing out.  An hour after the tide change it got messy and the average size dropped.
I hung around during the storm Saturday (yesterday) but it wasn't worth going out.  I saw 4 guys out there late afternoon who had a different opinion!
04.23.03
Wednesday
Took a "mental health day" today and surfed a solid 3 hours.  Bobby was out there for a while.  Conditions varies from closing out to flat to rideable.  There was a little set now and then that was decent sized but mostly it was "solid knee high".
Looks good at the moment for Saturday but Boston Marine has a habit of changing the forecast from " 4 - 8' " to " 1 - 2' " with regular frequency!
04.19.03
Saturday AM
Nice morning session in occasional head high (sets) and an off shore breeze holding up the faces.  Caught quite a few nice waves today in an excellent 2 hour session.  The number of people out there is increasing but not a problem yet :-)  It was really good to be out there this morning with clean lefts and rights goin' off.  I'm really tired at the moment!
04.18.03
Friday-PM
Drove around today around 1:00 PM - nothing going on. Windy and wind chop conditions but no rideable surf anywhere.
04.09.03
Wednesday
PM
Been busy this last week and off water during all that time.  Headed out at 7:30 this morning, gear in vehicle, but it was closing most places.  Went back around 10:30 and surfed for maybe 2 hours but it wasn't very clean.  Swell is from the SE.  Typically dropped into a close out, rode it a short while and then went back over the top at the last minute so as to avoid a pounding.  Secret breaks not firing.  Closeouts were solid head high and rideable was chest high.  It was basically short boardable and fast.  Over and out.
04.02.02
Wednesday
Caught some early morning waist high today at the haus.  Wind went East so traveled over to Tunces and finished the morning out in a dying swell there.  No one around.  Missed the Monday and Tuesday end of some decent surf as I was working.
03.27.03
Thursday
9:45 AM
Watching and waiting but it's quiet at the moment.  Possible Saturday afternoon swell?  Most years my surfing skills are high this time of year but with the extreme lack of surf this winter it feels like I took the whole winter off!  Howzabout a sunny day, head high and wind under 30 knots?  Willithappen?  Whoknows?
03.22.03
Saturday
11:15 AM
Going off this morning.  All points and reefs breaking in a South swell.  In the water at 7AM and out at 10AM.  Dense fog started clearing off at 10:15.  Glassy at first; some sets were fairly big!  Just locals out early but a few packs of tourists were spotted by mid-morning.  Heard there were 15 guys at the peak at Aves but I had my break all to myself for half the time out there.  I saw this wave at the last second coming out of the fog that was really big and up there. It nailed me inside so I got swept by it and the following waves back to the shore!  Some times it's easy to figure out when a session is over!  No problem.  Good session; some nice drops and walls.  Stoked this morning.

Friday
Tried one break for a while but it was lousy.  Left after an hour and drove around.  On a hunch I parked at a different one and went out into the dense fog.  Sets were solid head high and then it glassed off.  Surfed my brains out for about 4 hours.  Finally went in because my body stopped working.  First time all winter I had head high glass (small craft warnings had been predicted!) all to myself.  I wouldn't have minded sharing it!
Surfed one other time the last 2 weeks but never got around to adding it to this log.

Thursday
Several breaks were firing today.  Pulled up to one just as the snow began falling and surfed about 2 hours in waist high.  Had it all to myself for the last hour and it went off during that time for about 20 minutes at head high.  Snow was definitely tough on the eyes at times. Good session.  No snow accumulating out where I was but there was a fair amount of it on shore when I got in!  Used the snow blower at home - about 10" total accumulation.

Saturday
Nice little waves this morning.  Glass - no wind and just a few out there early.  Spoke briefly with Dave who also surfed Tuesday this week.  The tide was high early so it was a challenge to ride what was out there today but it was good to be wet on a glassy morning at da haus.  2 hours. Occasional head high.

Monday
Finally: a Monday at the office!  One of my favorite winter breaks was firing this morning so it was into the water at 10:30 AM.  It was a challenge getting out and that water is cold.  Surfed a solid 4 hours and finally went in with feet that were frozen.  Surfed a while in the AM with Dave.  Very few people out there; rare 1 1/2 but mostly head high (sets).  The stoke meter is on high tonight!

Thursday
Truly beeooteous day in RI.  Bright sunny day and 50 degrees (F).  Sun tan lotion needed.  Been outside in a "T" shirt shoveling snow off the garage roof and hacking away at ice in the drive way.  50 degrees is hot weather after zero and below the last few weeks!  Water is flat at the moment but that will soon change.

Tuesday
Posted 2/20.  Been too busy to update this log lately!  Surfed Tunces in some occasional close out stuff and no clearly defined takeoff zone.  Thought I was outside when I found I wasn't (by at least 100 yards).  Rode the pile in and went to 32nd street.  What a difference - occasional head high clean.  Rode out there all alone with Steve sharing the stoke.
The next morning (2/19) looked good just after sun rise but I was buried here with 20" of snow.

Monday
17 foot seas every 10 seconds and ENE winds at 40 knots.  Big storm out there right now.  Snowing like . . . well, you know!  Maybe 8" on the ground at the moment and more is due.  Blizzard conditions.  Snow blower will be the next project early tomorrow morning.  Will the wind go NW??? Mean while it's a BEEEOOO_TEOUS Day in Rhode Island.

Tuesday
Well, back to the "no surf" mode and near zero F temps for a while!  All I can say is that if the wind drops then checkitout; you never know.  Looks like a YMCA membership is in the works cause this exercise program (surfing every 2 weeks) is failing to git the job done!

Wednesday
Forecast was for high west winds to drop to 10-15 MPH so I gambled that the late afternoon would produce some surf.  Bingo!  There were 2 of us out at Aves and then I had the late afternoon all to myself.  Brilliant sun set, clean off shore feathering out the wave tops and had some decent walls and long rides.  Mostly rights waist high with set waves head high.  Excellent session.   Just what the Dr. needed!  Woof woof.

Friday
Last 2 days the marine forecast had dropped from a predicted 3-6' to 2-4' to 1-3'.  I couldn't handle it no mo.  Loaded up vehicle with stick and gear and headed out with attitude to tackle that 1'.  No one around this morning and the waves were small but definitely rideable if one were desperate.  I was.  Got dressed and went out.  About every 5 minutes there was a little waist high which was fine since there was no competition.  Later on Bobby showed up and a few more also.  We charged those thigh highs and were lookin' good I'll tell you!  It was huge just getting wet after such a long dry spell.  Stayed out a little over 2 hours.
Cranston Surf Patrol is threatening to be out there the first head high sunny 40 degree day with no wind.  I gotta feeling you won't be the only one out there!

Tuesday
This is the least surf I've ever had in January during the last 10 years.  We've had a bunch of storms go North of us and NW winds have been the result.  There hasn't been anything to update here so updates have been minimal.  Be assured that we check the intel every day hoping for a basic shift in the weather pattern.  I'm hoping for some serious NE, E or SE winds!  Bonus: It's minus 5 degrees (F) at 5:30 AM today (right now). . .and Narragansett Bay (salt water) is freezing over in various places.

Wednesday
It remains constantly windy (20-30K) and well below freezing with unfavorable winds from the MW and W. Haven't had enough water time recently.  We need a nice Nor' Easterner with winds going SE real soon but I don't see one at the moment. Hang in there whale blubber wet suited fans.  We'll get something eventually.

Saturday
It was minus 2 degrees F. at 7:30 AM so I waited until about 10:00 to head out.  Definitely a morning to warm up the vehicle . . . if it would even start!  At the haus one guy out and some nice sets coming through.  In the time it took me to get dressed the parking lot half filled (where on earth did they all come from?)  Got in the water before 11 and stayed out until 2:30 PM.  Sets were large at times but very clean and glassy.  With the exceptional cold everyone was surfing fairly conservatively.  It was no day to get caught inside on a multi-wave set.  I had a blast - excellent session but cold hands at the end. A spectator helped me unzip my pocket so I could get the car key out to unlock the car!  Some long walls and deep in the pocket at times.  Perfect!  Everyone who got wet today deserves the Polar Bear award.  Saw Josh out there.  Hi Josh!

Friday
A few of you may have wondered why there haven't been a lot of updates here recently. Well, it's because there has been no surf.  Lately, the morning routine has been to sign on, check the surf intel, see that it is flat again (with a 5 day forecast for generally more of the same) and then go on to other work.  We should definitely be into some surf next week because in 12 years we have not gone 3 weeks in a row without some action this time of year.  The flat spell that usually comes at New Years was apparently delayed this year into January so be patient my friends!  Juice on de way . . .  That said, I sure could use some yesterday.

Saturday
Missed surfing yesterday working on a complete web site makeover for my church.  Into the water this AM at 9:00 in a very high tide.  Wind held up the faces and the inside section was fast!  As time went on the waves moved out from shore and the wind dropped off for a while.  I'd call it waist to shoulder with a couple of sets that were more interesting.  Out there with Steve and that yellow long board and a few other guys and girl; no John or Sven today.  As for Fred . . . Fred who?  About noon time it flattened out and soon after I went in.  Snow flakes in the air most of the time and water is getting colder now.  Whale blubber suits only now until late spring. So far there's been surf every day this year.  There were a few times today where we didn't have the personnel to cover every wave.  Not enough people in the lineup again . . .

Thursday
Great day out in the water today.  Very few boards out and there were plenty of average shoulder high waves.  Sets were bigger!  Went out about noon time and came in maybe near 3:00 PM.  Really clean stuff but it was fairly windy and cold - don't think it got above freezing today.  There was surf all day.  Found myself unintentionally getting too deep on some set waves with that wall curving over the top and the loud bang as it hit next to me.  Some close calls with the crush zone inches away!  A bit hollow on the inside and really fast at times.  Good session.  Surfed every day this year . . .so far. . .

Wednesday

At 9:00 AM Lite was almost firing - some peaks but not a whole lot of walls - definite occasional chest high+, glassy and no one out.  Parking lot empty!  I did the right thing:  got dressed and went out; it was good to have an easy decision to start off the New Year with.  Surfed almost 3 hours and the best was early before a light breeze came up from the NE.  There were other breaks working but I was done at noon.  Nice little session.  Took a little nap this afternoon to catch up on the lack of sleep last night!  Happy New Year everyone!  Everyone who slept in this morning is really appreciated  . . . . . . dr. Surf

Friday
Haus was a solid knee high at 2 PM but it was a sunny late afternoon and glassy so I got dressed and went out.  Nothing special to write about . . . good to get wet and catch a few small waves for about 2 hours.
Yesterday (12/26) was maybe shoulder high at midday and only one board out there.  I suspect the locals grabbed the early morning shift and were gone by noon but you never know.
Looks like no surf for the next couple of days.

Saturday
Supersession
Pretty intense 4 hour session today.  Glass, very big sets, not a consistent take off zone but the lefts and rights were firing.  A locals hall of fame session today.  Edgar, Bobby, Josh, Mike (but no Jay or Fred).  We were lined up waaay out there in no mans land and even that seemed inside at times.  Some of the drops and walls were pretty good.  I'm lacking words to describe it right now but if I close my eyes I can see that horizon turn black and guys wasting no time moving out.  As far as I'm concerned the best I saw was Edgar with almost a "no paddle" drop over a big wave as if on automatic pilot.  Right place at the right time!

Friday
Got out early this morning and checked a few breaks.  Settled on the haus and spent maybe 3 hours out there.  Bright, sunny, glassy, morning with very little surf.  Later in the morning there was an occasional waist high.  Some times you just go out there get wet; waves are a bonus.  Slight sun burned face - a bonus situation in Rhode Island in December!

10:00_AM

Marine prediction last night was 10-15 K breeze from the N.  Actual this AM was near 30 from the NW.  2 breaks were knee high at 8:30 AM.  Another was head high but that wind was tough.  I saw one short board out there doing the right thing.  I lost interest with the wind situation this AM.  Maybe another day . . . Saturday?  If the wind drops later on today then there are possibilities . . .

Updated Saturday AM
*Unable to publish this update yesterday - service provider was down*
The water was a major challenge today.  High tide and a fairly good sized swell working.  It was a challenge to get out through the shore break.  I made my first wave - a medium fast right with a nice wall.  On the second wave I took off too deep, the lower wall bulged out, the top came over and down and Dr. Surf got mashed by thundering cold water.  Ugh.  Really light headed.  After that I got really conservative out there!
Finally switched breaks and rode for a few hours all alone.  One other board out there - he took the lefts and I had the rights.  Sets were walls of water with some excellent drops and verticality.  Haus was deserted today - no kayaks and just a (very) few boards.  Surfed 3 1/2 hours today and got out at 1:00 PM.  All points and reefs were going off.
Surf conservatively out there from now on 'til next May.  Water is cold and getting caught inside can leave you disoriented.
