Saturday PM
- All points, reefs and
breaks firing - |
In the water at 7:00 AM until
10:30 in an excellent South swell. Sets were big and clean, even
right through the tide change! This morning was supah. Think of your
occasional superlative and that's the way it was! Seeing a lot of
people who haven't been out all winter so that makes it a challenge.
At our break there were maybe a dozen guys and sets were waist to solid
head high plus.
Cool. |

Wednesday |
Nice 5 hour session at 3
different breaks yesterday. Waited for the wind to drop and got wet
around noon time. Tried out a new break that was shielded from the
wind and it was . . . OK I guess. A couple of closeouts convinced me
to move on so went to the Haus. As the afternoon went on the sets
were really great! Fast, vertical and, occasionally, long rideable
waves. I'm seeing alot of rubber-legs out there as guys who haven't
surfed all winter get back in the water again. The last wave was probably
the best - about a 1 1/2 rocket wave that was like the energizer bunny -
it kept going and going. Excellent session. |

Excellent session in the
morning but very challenging. Wind went NW for a while before going
West. Gusts were very intermittent, strong and seemed to coincide
with the set waves! What made the session a go was the wind
diminishing and some really excellent waves. Nice solid head high
sets. |

Saturday
AM to noon
Posted Monday 3/10/08 AM |
Very nice Saturday morning
session. The big winds didn't arrive until the afternoon so the AM
shift was supah! Light Easterly breeze. Started out as knee hi and
grew in size over the next several hours. Sets became good size and it
turned out to be a 4 hour session. I had it all alone for 45
minutes. It's great to surf with friends - that's the best! - but
every now and then you get a world class break all alone and have the
privilege of choosing whatever set wave you want. There's something
to be said for that too! A wind shift to the south brought in a
dense fog and after that it became "interesting" with the low tide
closeouts. Very good session. Going flat for a few daze. |

Thursday PM
Excellent session |
Very nice swell from the South
that went SE by noon. Nice set waves around 11:00 AM with long rides
at the Haus. The remarkable thing was there were very few out there
today. A few of us had it all to ourselves. There were a few
close outs that kept you awake but it was goin' off! Wet from 9:30
to 12:30 and there was plenty more after that. Nice and clean!
This winter has been one of the better ones for surf after a few
years of limited winter surf. Had a number of sessions that haven't
had opportunity to post here in the last 3 months. FP where
are ye? Today was the day! |
02.27.08
Wednesday PM |
Big Wednesday! Big swell
that was good early. Saw one triple 'O that would have needed a tow
in to catch unless you had a bad attitude about living long. Mostly
1 1/2 on the sets and really intimidating at times. Have you ever
experienced a bit of hyperventilating on first paddling out? Today
was the day for that! A couple of excellent rides on nice walls and
thick waves at high tide. Takeoff was easy though. Not many
out there today. Good 4 hour session.
Feb 18th PM and 19th AM were big also. Many hours wet but
never got the update done here. Eric T. got wet after 3 months dry.
Goes to show, there's even hope for Fred P. ! |
02.16.08
Saturday AM |
Flat this AM. Yesterday there was a
basic swell working but the trade off was the wind which was fairly
intense, especially early on. Went out around 9 until a little after
noon. As the wind dropped so did the waves but there were some
decent rides during that time. When the waves slacked off so did the
wind and as a set came the wind would howl, especially on the outside
break. I never really understood why that happens but it does. My vote is
for the wind to stop when the set arrives! Had the break all to
myself for almost an hour! |
|
02.13.08 Wednesday PM |
Did a little drive around this
morning at 8:00 AM but it wasn't rideable. |
02.08.08
Friday noon |
Surfed for a few hours at both
Tunces (fairly small) and South Side (fairly big but rowdy). Good to get
wet. Water is almost at lowest winter water temp. right now.

Drove around this AM -
excellent at South Side but the horn is blasting despite 9 mile
visibility. Go figure. Small waves at other breaks and small groups
of people here and there but not enough to get me in the the water.
Lots of out of state license plates lately. URI? That's all the news
for now. |
02.06.08
Wednesday PM |
Got down to the haus late this
afternoon and saw some nice little sets coming in. Wind was very
light. Fell for the scenario, got dressed and into the water at 3:15
PM. Two rides later the wind took a serious and sudden 180 degree
shift from SW to NE and started to howl and the session was ovah! Oh
well . . . |
02.02.08
Saturday PM
"All P, R and B" alert! |
Nice session today!
Outer break was crashing, big wall of white water coming at you and the
wave reforming on the inside. Very windy and meaty at first but by
noon time things had cleaned up. For about a half hour there were
just 2 of us out there and the crowd arrived at noon time. I'd call sets
at overhead max. Decent session. Wo Wo. |
01.30.08
Wednesday AM |
Been focused on things other
than surfing of late and sense that ole addiction acting up! I need
waves. AAARRG! Did a drive around yesterday afternoon and there was
a slight easterly swell but it was breaking almost on shore. Saw a
few locals out but the knee hi wasn't enough to get me out there. Today
looks promising if the wind doesn't howl too badly. I plan a check
of the breaks around 8 AM. Interesting political season: a choice
between Big O and Big Mac. Who could have guessed that? As for
me, hold the cheese . . . and the onions. |
01.18.08
Saturday PM |
Nice waves yesterday afternoon
and the swell continued this morning. Two good sessions. The
challenge this morning for some was to get the gear dry enough to get it
wet again! That's one nice thing about heating with wood - hang the
gear in the rafters overnight and you're good to go in the AM. . . which
is just what I did. |
|
01.13.08 Saturday PM
excellent |
In the water before sun up and
out at 12:10 PM. Dr. Surf scores on a big day at the Haus. A
little intimidating at first - it didn't look that big from the parking
lot - but once everyone acclimated it was a good session. It was one
of those days where you couldn't go to sleep out there. The sets
were large. A big Coast Guard Cutter was bombing through the sets
and messing up the wave pattern but after a while they left. Good. There
weren't a lot of people out today. Around 10:30 I had much of it all
to myself. That was weird because the waves were excellent.
Had one looong wave that took me almost all the way to Pilgrim. Wo
wo! Good stoke working tonight and tired! |
01.09.08
Wednesday PM |
Nice little waves yesterday
afternoon and looks like we had some carry over this morning. Got out a
little too early - it was wild and rough and mostly unrideable but
eventually cleaned up in late afternoon and we ended up having a nice
little session. One wave - not that big - but smooth as silk coming
under the peak on a back side. Good 3 hour January session. |
12.31.07
Monday
AM |
There have been waves every
few days. Had a nice session 12.27 but didn't get around to updating
here. 4 hours at 3 different breaks and a whole lot of people out at
the Haus. Too many, actually. Time flies when you're having fun.
The predicted overnight snow never came- rain only - locally which is just
fine with Dr. Surf. May you have a beeoooteous New Year's Eve and
beyond in 2008. |

Tuesday
Posted 12.26 |
Wet at sunrise in some nice
waves at the Haus. Didn't look that big from shore but it was a lot
different in the line up. The non-closeouts were fast and clean and the
sets were great. The low sun caused a big shadow on take off - adding to
the drama. Around 10:00 am it went off. Had one ride on a wave
that I underestimated the speed of. Locked in a long wall that
looked like a sure close out but every time it "bulged" it drew back.
Probably the best wave I've had in 2 years but I'm not sure I'd go for it
again if I knew how close to crash and burn it potentially might be!
Saw some other good rides out there also. What a nice Christmas
present this 4 hour session was. Hoot Hoot. |
12.24.07
Monday noon
Excellent! |
In the water at dawn in medium
sized surf. About 8:00 AM it started goin' off and we were in for
the kind of session I haven't seen for a while. Occasional set waves
started jacking way up on takeoff. The outside reef began breaking
and reforming. A definite Larry, Mo and Curley Woo Woo alert!
By 10:00 the West wind picked up substantially and there were a lot of
people in the water - almost like summer - except the water is "somewhat
cooler". Full winter gear from now on until spring. Great
session! Hoot! |
12.12.07
Wednesday AM |
I see there is a plan to
produce electricity from waves and that the location is "Point Judith".
source Will this impact our surfing? Don't know.
This is something our stewards of RI Surfing need to be part of because we
need both electricity and surf. Is anyone from the RI Chapter of
SurfRiders is reading this? |

Wednesday PM |
This last month has been
interesting! Swell from Noel, last week's strong west winds and
swell, nice session near Pilgrim; other swells and, today, some nice waves
this morning. In the water at 8AM and out at noon at Tunces.
After some junk food back in the water at 32nd street with some occasional
decent sets although not as big as this morning. About 6 hours wet
today. 4/3 weather and gloves and hoods will soon not be optional.
I've gone to winter gear now. Tired tonight! |
10.21.07
Sunday AM
Oompah! |
It was going off yesterday.
Nice swell that was occasionally intimidating, especially after such an
incredibly long time without real surf. Got in the water at
noon at a little break that normally fires in the winter and had a nice 3
hour session with 25 of my best friends. Had one particular backside
that was beautious . . . it didn't close out and had a great ride! Later
on checked out the The haus in late afternoon but it wasn't that clean and
the lot was full of cars - many of them from out of State - NY and CT.
What a zoo that was!
Looks like some leftovers today! |
10.12.07
Friday |
Friday we finally had some
waves after a long dry spell! Lasted 1 day but it was good. 3
hour session at the haus in average chest hi. Fairly crowded but the
falling temperatures will take care of that problem in just a few weeks.
(posted 10.14 AM)
P.S. - Saw Fred smelling
the salt water at the haus. People were amazed at the gripping white
knuckled story of how he broke out of the "assisted living facility" that
very morning. Even Levy was amazed! Fred was in such a hurry
that he, unfortunately, forgot his board but . . . that's OK.
Maybe next time! |
10.04.07
Thursday AM |
Last two days have been average
waist high depending on the break. Got in 6 hours yesterday in a
rare long double session with lunch in the middle. Only one break
firing that waist high on a regular basis although the Haus had a few nice
waves early yesterday afternoon. |
10.02.07
Tuesday AM |
Nice partly cloudy day, fairly
warm as I type this. Think I'll go beach walking today. OK. |
09.20.07
Saturday PM |
Caught the third (small) wave
before sun up at the Haus. Not that great but there were little
waves and I was suffering from acute salt withdrawal. Tons of cars
driving thru the parking lot but no takers. After a while the wind
came up strong from the NW and switched breaks by paddling in and driving
to Tunces. Hoot hoot. Nice off shores and a very light swell
working. Very Cool. Got the "sun burned grin" stoke back and
that's good. Very good! I'm not alone either . . . There are
several dozen others too. Hope you got some today if you missed the
unannounced waves yesterday afternoon . . . |
09.12.07
Wednesday PM
Hallelujah! |
Ten minutes before the sun
rose this morning I took a nice little drop on a wave , turned right and
it was off to the races! Nice waves early on - chest hi down the line -
and gradually diminishing to unrideable at noon time. Delicious! Hope you
got some! |
|
09.11.07 Tuesday PM |
Been hearing lots of hype from
the East Bay side of RI over expected surf conditions for several days.
It's been unrideable so far. East wind was strong at 10 AM and at
noon it shifted to South. Nothing happening. Lots of people
driving around but no action. Bummer in de summer. |
09.10.07
Monday AM |
Wow! Not many updates
recently. Few small wave sessions now and then but not much to write
about here. It's been flat and dry but that should change soon.
Gabriele has been downgraded to a tropical depression after brushing
Hatteras and is currently tracking more south than originally forecast.
Actually, the most interesting thing at the moment is the big band of
showers off the coast of Brazil. Maybe that will develop at some
point. |
08.23.07
Thursday PM1
Break firing! |
Excellent session at Tunces
today. Late morning it started goin' off with some occasional set waves
that were definitely worth getting wet for. Surfed Monday also but
this was far better. In the water 3 hours (until noon) at Tunces then got
a burger and finished the afternoon at the Haus. There was no one at the
Haus. Could not believe it! Had it all to myself for hours.
Decent. 6 hours total. This was definitely the day for the swell to
finally get in. Wo wo! |
08.11.07
Saturday PM |
Had a nice little early
morning session of about 2 hours. Little waist high becoming thigh
hi then "solid knee hi" becoming "shin high" . . . It was good to be wet
today and get some exercise. 3 of us out there and we had a great
time! There have been several other "solid knee hi" sessions in the last
few weeks but I didn't post them here. It's been a pretty long time since
I saw any decent waves locally. The first 6' we see this summer/fall
season will look intimidating! It's been a while hasn't it?
|
08.06.07 Monday
AM |
Little wind waves overnight
tonight. Last Friday (3rd) it was unrideable from 6:00 to 8:00 AM
but there was a little 3 hour window with some occasional waist high
waves. Had a nice little session. Heard from a friend who said it was
unrideable all that day. He he . . . almost right! I'm seeing quite
a few novices hanging out in the break - in the way of the sets.
That's OK at the beach but at the breaks ??? Oh well, that's the
nature of summer surfing! I'm beginning to look forward to the winter
season - except that the waves in the winter the last few years have been
not that frequent. One of these years I'm gonna join the "Y".
Maybe in 2008?
Ramble on. |
08.03.07
Friday
4:45 AM |
Looks like a little bump out
there. Not much though. I'm on the road fellow trekkies. |
|
07.20.07 Friday AM |
At the Haus this morning at
5:45 AM but no go. Knee hi and wind junk. Bummer.
Fred corrected a mistake I made: he lives in an "assisted living"
facility, not a nursing
home. |
|
07.19.07 Thursday AM
. . . Rant |
2 Days ago I saw another
New England based surf site forecast of big waves that relies on
advance forecasts whose margin of error is beyond belief (highly suspect).
We live in a time when news organizations try to out do each other with
sensationalized news stories to attract
attention. RIRiders' pursues
objective, not subjective, truth. Our goal for the last 10 years online
has been to take a "wait and see" attitude and the flat water today
certainly refutes the big wave speculators. Our prediction?
Right now it looks like the best possibility for small rideables is
tomorrow morning. Yawn.
On a different note - Fred P. - if you
see this send me an email - I lost your "srf . . ." address and the breaks
are buzzing with news that "FF" is planning a comeback. I told them
you're too old and slow and currently residing in a Cranston nursing home.
Yawn. |
07.16.07
Monday PM |
There were some nice sets
going through in the morning. Mostly a South swell with south facing
breaks going off. Had the Haus all to myself for an hour (!)
with everyone at a certain break near the Mist. Decent. Where
I was it was really jacking up so you had to be in the right place to
catch one of the bigger waves. It was great to be out there after the long
spell of flat water we've had. Wave quality was fair. Surfed the
morning and late afternoon shifts. The sized dropped quite a bit in
the PM. |
07.06.07
Friday PM |
Surfed a total of 9 hours
between Thursday afternoon and noon time Friday. Small average
waist high swell with an occasional medium sized wave. 2 Good sessions.
Didn't have a chance to post until today (07.09.07) |
|
06.16.07 Saturday PM |
I had a hunch this morning and
drove to the ocean. The wave period had unexpectedly changed from 8 to 16
seconds and, what to my wondering eyes should appear but . . . rideable
waves! Decent! Got wet. Surfed! 3 Hours! Great
Googliemooglie. Knee high to occasional chest on a "flat" day. Just
goes to show . . . ya never know! Basic South swell - doubt it willl last
long but then, it was supposed to be flat today! |
06.15.07
Friday AM |
It's been mostly flat in the
West Bay for 10 days. Expected a week of NE winds to produce
something but it looks like only Newport got anything. Did a drive around
this morning - there were some barely rideables at Tunces but it was knee
high and very slow. Didn't look that inviting so I didn't get wet.
We're in the early stages of a surf drought right now; moving in the
direction of desperate. Not much more to say except it should remain flat
for the next 3 days, at least. This once a month surf deal needs
improvement! |
06.05.07
Tuesday PMWo
Wo Wo |
All
Points, reefs and breaks firing yesterday and today. No time
to update this log until now. Some big, meaty waves for a change.
Sometimes a session gets down to one wave - mine was a right this morning
near the haus. It kept jacking up as I was coming down and a solid
wall formed to my right - nearly vertical. I was too deep. Thought
for sure that I was gonna get trashed severely but the wall stayed up!
Wo Wo! Nice wave. No pride thing on that wave - just glad I didn't get
wiped! Sun burned face. Good to be on dry land after 10 hours wet. |
06.02.07
Saturday AM |
Not much going on at the
moment. The 3-5' forecast for today changed overnight to 2-4' and
even that is a little optimistic. The track of the second tropical storm
off Florida is projected closer to the New England coast than yesterday so
we remain surf challenged! One thing for certain at the moment - looks
like rain Monday or so. |
05.19.07
Saturday PM
Supersession |
All points, reefs and breaks
were goin' off today. Tunces was the
best early on (7:00 AM) and eventually began closing out as the swell
picked up. The NOAA forecast early this AM of 2-4' was very funny! I
had the van packed last night and eased onto the highway before 6AM.
Had a 3 hour AM session in some occasionally intimidating close outs; took
some time for photographs and good conversations at the Haus; grabbed
lunch and then back in the water for a 3 hour afternoon session.
Surfed 3 breaks in the afternoon. The waves cleaned up and the water
got glassy. Supersession with exceptionally long rides. Had a
dozen big rides and got really smoked maybe 3 times. It was
Ugh_ly but we lived to surf again! Some occasional double up sets and it
was head high down the line (on average). Lots
of tired, happy people tonight in Rhode Island. Here's a
short video
of 1 wave. (posted 05.21.07) |
05.08.07
Tuesday PM |
Really nice session today.
Waist to chest down the line and some of the take offs were real! You had
to be patient. Waves had the "outgoing tide" look and feel - kinda long
and a feeling of being behind run over by the wave from behind (closing
out). But, if you caught the right wave at the right place you
didn't get closed. I saw quite a few out there who hadn't been
surfing in a while but, despite the occasional drop in, the vibe was
generally good. Good 3 1/2 hours today and one particularly
excellent wave. |
04.28.07
Saturday
AM |
Been watching the advance
intel for Saturday (today) morph this week - did you see it too? It went
from 3-5' to 4-6' to 4-7' and this AM (it's 5:14 right now) it's actually
less than 3'. Bummer. Year after year it's the same - the surf is
often 3 days away and as the predicted day arrives, the "predicted event"
is postponed or disappears. As for this RIRiders
web site - I've ignored the forecasts this week and the other web sites
(horrors!) mirroring the same predictions and said "semi-flat"
since last Monday. Not a fun forecast but a real one. No oinks this
morning. I'd sooner a nooner.
Got in a little waist-hi at the haus for a few hours . . . |
04.23.07
Monday
PM |
Been down in
North Carolina and happened to be in Virginia last Monday when several
black unmarked cars went by, lights and sirens going, apparently on the
way to Virginia Tech. We didn't know what was going on at the time.
Completely missed the big storm here although the wind and rain
were intense as we drove on Sunday and Monday. One of the most impressive
pictures I saw came from Channel 12 WPRI
showing water coming over the top of the wall at the Town Beach.
Caught some
left overs at the Haus on Saturday - mostly waist high with an Easterly
swell. |
04.05.07
Thursday
PM |
Nice little 3 hour session
this morning at the haus in head hi sets. Not breaking in any defined area
so people were spread out. It was a case of stake out a place and
wait for a set to come your way. Excellent session for a change!
3 close outs in a row and then a great wave. Saw Bobby at his secret spot.
Hoot! Hoot! |
|
03.28.07 Tuesday AM |
Nice little waves yesterday
morning in a 3 hour session. Glassy at times in mostly waist high
with an occasional bigger one. There is a basic pulse out there that
is generating a swell. I see it continuing this morning. Do I
dare say "all points, reefs and breaks"? No, I won't say that . . . |
03.24.07
Saturday
AM |
Surfed yesterday morning in
the fog at the haus in mostly waist hi. The waves continue to be mostly
summer type "wind waves"; no real power. Good session. Looks like it will
be going flat for a few days. |

Saturday
PM |
There has been surf everyday
for the last week but the quality of the waves has generally been poor.
Earlier this morning it was going off at a favorite break but I forgot my
gloves and boots at home!!! Big mistake. By the time I got them the
wind had picked up from the West and it was over. Oh well.
Hope you got some! Got in a few hours at a different break . . . |
03.15.07
Thursday
AM |
Surfed the last two days; it
was a little bigger on Tuesday. Quality of the waves has been
average to poor as it looks more like a wind swell than a basic pulse. I
see the average size has doubled overnight and the period is lengthening.
I'd love to see some clean head high but so far it hasn't materialized.
Road trip was to Guatemala for 9 days but no surfing at an elevation of
4,500 feet! |

I'm on the road for a while.
Badda bing, badda boom! |

02.27.07 Tuesday PM
Good session |
Hoot! All the intel this
AM suggested no surf but I had a hunch and it paid off. The Haus was
goin' off and no fog horn! Nice little lines with a definite South
swell that got better as the morning went on. Wave period was maybe
11 seconds and sets were head hi. Best and longest rides were around
11:00 AM. Wind was almost calm and the sets were rolling in.
Hard to believe but I had it all to myself for around 45 minutes!!!
The water's cold out there but the rewards are definitely there.
Had another good session on 02.20 but didn't get around to posting
it here. |

Noon |
Did the drive
around this morning. Not that good early (waist hi with the wind
closing the wave out) so went into town and got a hair cut and then went
back. I'd call it waist to chest but the wind is blowing the tops of
the wave back 100 feet as the wave begins to break. No one out and
that includes me. Roads clear early but icing up at noon. Not
worth the drive as the wind picks up even more this afternoon |
|
02.13.07 Tuesday AM |
2/13 Update from
Channel 6: "This is a very changeable forecast and any
subtle shifts in the track will make for potentially HUGE differences in
the snow amounts." Right.
Chanel 12:
"HERE'S OUR LATEST THINKING ON THE WEATHER FOR
TONIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Our current thinking is that"
Right.
Channel 10: "There’s going to
be wind, snow, rain, sleet, the possibility of flash freezing, more snow
and even snow drifts before it’s over, according to the weather service"
That covers it!
Did they read my 02.12 forecast? |
02.12.07
Monday
AM |
It's
fascinating to see the weather forecasting in Rhode Island - as soon as a
real storm begins to develop you can't find a solid, definitive
prediction! The local weather men head for the hills and are unavailable
for comment. Channel 6, 10 and 12 have been the same for 40 years and the
message is always the same: "It depends on the track of the storm".
Translated: "We don't have a clue." The Blizzard of '78 forecast was "in
excess of 6" and we got 30+. It would be refreshing to see a weather
man (probably an ex-surfer) put it on the line a full 36 hours before
storm arrival and say just simply "rain" or "snow" and how much. Don't
hold your breath. Me? I expect rideable surf and lots of wind and
rain and snow and ice some where by Friday latest. Aye-yup.
Count on it. |

Been flat this
week and looks flat for at least the next several daze. |

Nice session
today! Wet from 9 to 12:30 in some occasional sets that were way up
there. The Haus was the best but most breaks were firing. Water isn't as
cold as it normally is at this time of year and the below freezing
temperatures were quite manageable. There were a lot of people out there
including, surprisingly, a few who hadn't been surfing in a while. Saw the
Duke out there along with a whole lot of locals. Good session on a
sunny day with a West breeze. |

I know what
you're thinking: 25 degrees, 30 knot gusts, outgoing tide, ugh! No
leftovers this AM because it looks good right through Monday night!
The frost is on the pumpkin baby. Get your ice ax and away we go
right after you have a shower, have breakfast, read the paper, check the
surf reports, walk the dog, etc.. I'm with you - take your time. |

Looks good for
the weekend but, as is usually the case in the winter, the West wind is
the wildcard. |

Friday AM |
The storm
moved further out to sea than expected, it's flat and I see "sea smoke"
due to the temperature which was 0.1 degrees (F) this morning at sun
rise! The lawn is no longer growing locally.
Happened to be in Newport yesterday and picked up some gloves at Island
Sports to replace my current pair held together with electrical tape. They
didn't have my size boots so they directed me across the street to
Elemental. I like it when competitors help each other out! Both
stores were very helpful and had
O'Neill boot size 13 which is,
in reality, an undersized size 12.
I don't understand why manufacturers don't manufacture boots to the
correct size.
If you know of a manufacturer who has a legitimate hard sole sized
13 boot let me know! <webmaster aat quiet waters dot organization >! |

Noticed yesterday that it
was still light at 5:15 PM. We've gained a half hour of daylight in
the last 3 weeks - that's good news. Gale on the way but winds will be NW,
not NE. |

Nice little
waist to shoulder hi at the haus with an occasional bigger one this
morning. Wet 3+ hours as the temperature slowly dropped down below
freezing. Been a while since I had that slight burning sensation in
the face while on the drive home. Winter seems to have finally
arrived and the water is starting to get that "biting" sensation if you
have to dive several waves in a row! My personal standard for "cold"
water is about 42 degrees (F). Below that temperature I measure the
wave a bit more carefully . . . Good session with maybe 6 guys spread out
in the line up. Plenty to go around. |

Saturday AM |
At noon
yesterday it was unrideable - just little wind waves. It will be
flat for a few days. Ocean water temps of 46 degrees in the Narragansett
area are unusually warm for this time of year and a reflection of
the lack of cold weather to date. Those consistent SW instead of NW winds
are the cause. I like warm weather - no complaints! Got Broadband?

I see a report
of waist to chest high+ right now - I'd call it ankle to knee but then I'm
fairly tall! It should build today and possibly be rideable
this afternoon once the wave period gets about 30% longer. Looks like it
will turn really cold by mid week so enjoy it now while you can! |

Good session! |
Got into the
water around 11:30AM and stayed out there until 3:15. Fairly windy
for the first several hours but as the afternoon went on the wind died off
and it was head high and smooooth! Lots of bodies out there in the 65
degree (F) record January warmth! A rare day indeed. There were some
big sets that came through now and then. Altogether it was an
excellent session. Really tired tonight! |

Early morning
was very unusual. Looked like a south swell that you generally see
only in hurricane season but there was a strong West wind. There
were some long rides that got better around 10:00 AM. Lot of riders out
there but they were spread out. Nice session! |
